~A Maritime Nation~Adventuress, another story

I have previously written about Puget Sound’s historic tall ship, the schooner Adventuress, and the organization which operates her, Sound Experience. Since 1959 she has been a sail training ship. But, at more than 100 years old, she is much more than that. She is a shining beacon for exposing children of all ages to ships and sailing, but, also to the marine environment and what must be done to preserve and care for this fragile resource. Through the years she has touched many prominent Northwest figures such as William Boeing and Doc Freeman.
Her life was not without trials. Just 2 1/2 years after launching, she was gutted by fire, ending up full of water, her decks awash, and pronounced unfit for service. However, even scorched and beaten, Adventuress had captured the hearts of those she touched and in just under 5 months she was underway for sea trials and immediately pressed back into service as a pilot boat.
Today she plies the Puget Sound with other historic ships and continues to sail only through the dedication and efforts of the maritime community and the staff of Sound Experience.
Here, I would like to share with another special, although very typical of her service, event just completed this summer. Visit my Slideshare page and read the article passed to me from Sound Experience's Executive Director, Catherine Collins, from the Concrete Herald about the Adventuress' trip with their local 7th and 8th graders.
Adventuress is truly one of our special stories of the maritime industry. I hope you enjoy this article. Perhaps it will motivate you to check out her website and even get involved in someway.
