Maritime industry embraces methanol, wind propulsion, ammonia, and CO2 initiatives

It has been a busy week in the decarbonization space in the maritime sector with a myriad of projects and milestones announced. Therefore, it has been very difficult to pick and choose the most important ones, hence this week's edition of the newsletter will have many honorable mentions to highlight the progress being made in various decarbonization fields including methanol, wind-propulsion, ammonia and carbon capture and storage.

Methanol

  1. Maersk's Industry-First Conversion: Container shipping industry major 马士基 has announced plans to convert an existing containership into a #methanol dual-fuel engine. The company revealed that the first #engine #retrofit in the industry is to be conducted in the middle of 2024, noting its intention to replicate it on sister #vessels when going for a special survey in 2027.

  3. Methanol-to-Fuel Cell Power Chain: Powercell Limited , e1 Marine , and Maritime Partners have successfully tested the world's first methanol-to-fuel cell power chain. This breakthrough paves the way for the utilization of methanol as a clean energy source for marine applications.
  4. Expanding Methanol Adoption: Furthermore, J. Lauritzen and 嘉吉 have added a third methanol-fueled Kamsarmax vessel to their fleet. This expansion reflects the growing interest and confidence in methanol as a viable fuel for the maritime industry.
