Marine Institute SMART Research Vessel Bursaries 2021
The Marine Institute in collaboration with the Strategic Marine Alliance for Research and Training (SMART) is offering up to 24 bursaries on dedicated FEAS surveys in 2021 on the Celtic Explorer and Celtic Voyager.
Bursaries include groundfish, acoustic and underwater TV surveys (UWTV) on up to 14 survey legs between February and December 2020 in the Irish EEZ.
Bursaries are valued at a fixed rate of €95 per survey night and successful applicants will be fully integrated into the survey work programme and make an important contribution to achieving the survey goals. This is a unique opportunity for learning and mentoring in offshore data collection skills and practice.
Required
- Applicants should be marine oriented graduates, postgraduates, researchers or practitioners in marine oriented enterprises.
- Applicants must hold current ENG11 medical and Personal Survival Techniques (PST STCW95) certificates.
- Applicants should be able to demonstrate some prior sea going experience.

COVID 19
Bursaries are subject to COVID 19 contingencies. Shortlisted applicants must demonstrate capacity to adhere to HSE public health advice for preventing the transmission of COVID 19. Prior to joining a survey successful applicants will agree to comply with P&O Maritime and Maritime pre-survey protocols for a period of 14 days and undergo COVID 19 testing before the start of the survey.

- CE21005: Irish Anglerfish and Megrim Survey Leg 3. 10th to 24th April.
- CE21009: Western Edge Small Pelagics Acoustic Survey. 9th June 20th July.
- CE21012: Celtic Sea Herring Acoustic Survey. 8th to 28th October.
- CE21013: Irish Ground Fish Survey. 29th Oct. to 14th December.
Applications
Applications are invited from graduates, postgraduates, early stage researchers and practitioners from Higher Education Institutes, Research Agencies and Marine related enterprises across the Island of Ireland.

SMART
The Strategic Marine Alliance for Research and Training (SMART) is a marine science partnership that builds capacity in offshore research, monitoring and resource development by providing structured research vessel access to students, researchers and marine oriented professionals. Key academic and research partners within the alliance include Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT), INFORMAR, NUI Galway, University College Cork (UCC), Maynooth University and the Marine Institute. SMART is based in GMIT at the Marine and Freshwater Research Centre (MFRC).
