Marine & Energy: The Odd(ly Compatible) Couple

Marine & Energy: The Odd(ly Compatible) Couple

There is no denying that the marine and energy industries go hand-in-hand, and it’s arguable that one would not exist as they do today without the other. This notion seems particularly true in the Gulf of Mexico.

But the integration of these two industries is not always seamless. Contractual commitments can—and often do—lead to gray areas in terms of responsibilities, application of law, and parties’ insurance obligations.

Issues arising out of marine and energy-related contractual agreements have garnered increased scrutiny from all interested parties, including:

·???????brokers

·???????underwriters

·???????attorneys

·???????those entering into the contracts

The current state of jury verdicts in many of the jurisdictions where these contracts are litigated, especially in the United States, only adds to the unease.

Both the marine and energy sectors are continually evolving, which reinforces that issues stemming from energy-related contracts and agreements are certainly not going away anytime soon. As a participant in these industries, we too must evolve and continue to educate ourselves.

Join us in September at the Houston Marine and Energy Insurance Conference, where we will have a series of world-class presenters speaking on these and other important topics impacting our sector. The HMEIC’s guiding theme this year is: “Are Innovation and Globalization Outpacing Insurance and Regulation?”
