Marilyn Santiesteban Retires

Marilyn Santiesteban Retires

On Tuesday, February 28, I will walk out of the hallowed halls of the George H. W. Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M and my role as a career services advisor to graduate students for the last time. I leave behind so many warm memories of students here, and at Bentley University in Waltham, MA where I was before. Prior to that, I coached many affected by layoffs in the depths of the last recession.

There is something very sacred about holding the spirit of a person at their lowest point. Always keeping a clear head to see their gifts and value when they themselves are too fraught to see them. Alternatively, seeing the shining possibilities of graduate students not yet self-aware enough to recognize their talents. Sure, I can polish up your resume or make your LinkedIn profile shine, but this job is so much more than that. It’s identifying and lighting up paths you cannot see for yourself.

It is also a lot of strategies, marketing, social media, and keeping on top of a constantly emerging workplace. The past two years have brought unbelievable change. The ball is finally (and firmly) in the job seeker’s hands.

Our wonderful students, my terrific boss, and colleagues were such a pleasure to work with! However, there was one more person here at the Bush School who was very special to me. In fact, he is the reason I came to the Bush School, my husband Kent Portney. Kent made the jump to the Bush School from Tufts University where he had taught for over 30 years. The resources provided by a Tier 1 research university and the outstanding colleagues he found here at the Bush School dazzled him. He did some of his best work here (https://today.tamu.edu/2020/06/25/in-memoriam-kent-portney/). He passed away in June of 2020.

I would love to hear anecdotes of how we met or of our interactions. These are the memories that I will take with me as I leave these beloved halls. Love and success to you all!

Best wishes on this new chapter of life! I’m sure you will keep sharing love and light to those people around you. I have such great memories from the Bush School and you’re an essential part of that experience. Your face was one of the first ones to welcome us, always providing candid advice and invaluable support. I will always cherish the moments we shared at the Bush School. Thanks for being the best advocate of your students in launching or strengthening their careers.

Congrats! You were fantastic at helping Bushies represent themselves well on paper and in interviews. I am grateful for your service to the school I love! I hope retirement is relaxing and full of the things you enjoy.
