Marijuana Smoking in the Home Limited When People Understand the Harm of Secondhand Marijuana Smoke
Peter Bialick
President at Group to Alleviate Smoking Pollution (GASP of Colorado)
A March 2024 study demonstrates that when people perceive that exposure to secondhand cannabis smoke (cSHS) is harmful it is strongly associated with having a complete in-home cannabis smoking ban. The study found that almost a third of US adults perceive cSHS as at least “mostly safe” and concluded that there is strong need to educate the general population about potential risks associated with cSHS exposure to raise awareness and encourage adoption of household rules prohibiting indoor cannabis smoking. Many of the people surveyed had children in the home. For more information about the study, click here. GASP’s Smoke-Free Housing Activities
Under GASP’s subcontract with the Denver Department of Public Health and Environment (DDPHE) GASP assisted in a few trainings, focus group, data collection, and membership with the Apartment Association of Metro Denver (AAMD).
GASP helped placed four ads in AAMD’s Trends Magazine on the benefits of smoke-free policies. Trends is circulated to 7,700 decision-makers at every apartment owner/management company and supplier member.?
GASP and DDPHE distributed materials and spoke to many attendees at AAMD’s annual trade show held at the Colorado Convention Center in May that was attended by nearly 2,000 housing-industry managers and executives. Our team made some great connections and encountered managers who are interested in how to implement or enforce smoke-free policies for their properties.
GASP also is responsible for distributing an electronic newsletter on the benefits of smoke-free policies, enforcement tips, information on secondhand smoke, and other smoke-free news of interest to nearly 2,000 housing providers, property management professionals, and housing associations.
GASP continues to provide a listing of multifamily and condominium properties that have implemented smoke-free policies at mysmokefreehousing.com.? When GASP first launched this website in 2006, there were less than 50 buildings listed on the website.? By the end of this year more than 10,000 will be listed on the website.? In addition, GASP has found through surveys that many of the new apartments that have opened in the last few years are implementing smoke-free policies that cover the entire property.
