Marietta Business Spotlight: Studio Bungee

This month, we’ve got another unique Marietta business to share with you! I had the opportunity to sit down with Christal McNair, owner of Studio Bungee, a fitness studio that combines Astro-Durance total body bungee systems with a group fitness atmosphere. While Studio Bungee is open to everyone at any fitness level, the bungee system they utilize is uniquely constructed to assist in rehabilitating people with previous injuries.

The Beginning

Christal’s journey into the fitness world began at 17 years old when she had her first back surgery for her scoliosis. Three back surgeries later, she found it very painful to exercise, and her doctors offered her limited recommendations. Becoming frustrated with her lack of options, Christal began researching alternative fitness methods and stumbled upon the bungee. Christal soon realized that there were no bungee studios in Georgia. Determined, Christal flew to the closest studio, which was located in Cape Coral, Florida, to take a bungee group fitness class. She was amazed to find that she was able to complete an entire class without her usual back pain. After this eye-opening experience, Christal knew she wanted to bring this opportunity to her community. Within 5 months of taking that first class, Christal opened Studio Bungee in Marietta in July of 2018. Christal decided to take 6 months off from her 25-year commercial banking career to pursue her passion full-time. With her daughters’ help, she is now able to continue pursuing her banking career, while simultaneously owning a successful small business. 

So, How Does This Work?

Upon arrival, you will see that there are 5 bungees hanging from the ceiling of Studio Bungee. One of her three bungee certified trainers will provide a harness and attach you to the bungee. The main advantage of the bungee fitness class is that it gives you a 30-minute, fast-paced, low impact workout, so if you are someone who suffers from joint pain or are just short on time, this is the studio for you.

Physicians, physical therapists, and chiropractors in the area will often refer their patients to Studio Bungee as a way for them to continue their rehabilitation. Studio bungee limits class sizes to no more than 5 or 6 to give a more personalized experience and to better accommodate those who require modifications. Because participants are securely attached to their bungee, those with stability issues will have support and protection from falls as they regain their strength. Christal has recently initiated a new program geared towards those with more severe disabilities, called Bridge Exercise Therapy, where the bungee is used as a tool along with other practices.

Why Marietta?

Having been a commercial banker in Cobb County for the past 25 years, Christal built a solid center of influence in the area and knew she could use her network to build her business. Even more so, she intentionally chose her location on Whitlock Avenue for its proximity to the hospital, several doctors, physical therapy, and chiropractor offices, and to five different retirement communities. And, of course, she says she loves being close to the Marietta Square.

Working with the City

When asked about her experience working with the City, Christal said the process went smoothly because of Economic Development Manager, Daniel Cummings. When an issue arose, he was there to answer her questions quickly and point her in the right direction.

In the Business of Community

Being community driven, Christal expressed that her main goal from the beginning was to help people with injuries, like herself, stay active. She said she loves to see people realize that they can do exercises on the bungee that they couldn’t do before. It is important to her that people know that there are options out there and that you can exercise without pain.
