Marietta Business Spotlight: Innova Brain Rehabilitation
If all you know about chiropractors is that they perform adjustments, get ready because you are in for a surprise. For February’s Business Spotlight, I sat down with Dr. Frank Patterson, a Chiropractic Neurologist and his wife and office Patient Care Coordinator, Leslie Petsoff of Innova Brain Rehabilitation. Innova Brain Rehabilitation uses unique, cutting edge practices to treat complicated neurological conditions in individuals of all ages and from all over the world. Chiropractic neurology can be used to treat people with a variety of conditions, ranging from long-term concussion side effects to autism to memory loss.
The Beginning
Dr. Patterson began his career in healthcare by obtaining his undergraduate degree in biology and then accepting a position in a research laboratory. While working at the lab, he soon developed an interest in chiropractic. In pursuit of this newfound passion, Dr. Patterson attended Life University in Marietta, where he specialized in neurology. While at Life University, Dr. Patterson had the opportunity to be taught by and subsequently worked as a resident clinician with Dr. Jim Duffy, a seasoned Chiropractic Neurologist and the owner of Innova Brain Rehabilitation. This relationship proved to be mutually beneficial. When Dr. Duffy opened Innova in 2016, Dr. Patterson became a staff clinician at his new operation in Marietta.
So, what is Chiropractic Neurology?
Chiropractic neurology is a specialization within chiropractic that uses advanced diagnostic testing and an array of sensory-based movements to re-establish function and communication between the peripheral body and the brain. While traditional adjustments are performed at Innova Brain Rehabilitation, their primary focus is to establish the root cause of the injury or disorder and discern which areas of the brain need to be pinpointed in therapy to remedy the issue. Some examples of these sensory-based treatments include eye movement therapy through slow or fast tracking and vestibular/inner ear functionality exercises.
One story Dr. Patterson used to illustrate his rehabilitation methods is the case of a stroke patient that suffers from severely decreased range of motion in their arm. A mirror is placed in the middle, where they then move the healthy, left arm in certain patterns, but in the mirror, it looks as though it is the right arm. This 10-15-minute exercise allows the patient’s brain to relearn movement patterns. With consistent therapy and layering of other sensory-based therapies, Innova staff have seen exponential improvement in cases like these. This is just one way they are using contemporary practices to improve people’s lives.
Why Marietta?
When asked why Innova chose Marietta, Dr. Patterson mentioned proximity to Life University, accessibility of their office to I-75, and the office space itself as contributing factors. However, one of the main draws was the welcoming community that their current office park in Marietta offers. Being that Dr. Patterson and his colleague, Dr. Duffy, treat patients with debilitating injuries and conditions, they wanted to ensure that nearby business owners would be welcoming, and they are confident that they found that in Marietta.
Finding Answers and Seeing Results
Throughout our conversation, Dr. Patterson reiterated that the patients he sees are usually those who have been struggling for a long time and are still seeking answers and results that they haven’t been able to find elsewhere. He says that the most rewarding part of his job is giving people answers and then seeing the positive results from working with them. They set themselves apart from their already specialized field by working one-on-one with every single patient. Not only do they spend the time with each patient, but they devote themselves to staying up to date on the most recent innovations in the field so that all patients receive the most cutting-edge care.
It is evident that the Innova Brain Rehabilitation team has an innate passion for what they do. Both Dr. Patterson and Leslie said that they truly enjoy the relationships they build with their patients as they work to give them back parts of their lives that were missing for so long.
