Mariano Fortuny 1879 - 1949
The history of screen printing in Europe has often been reported quite hastily and the narrative in many texts is made to begin with the filing of a 1907 patent by Samuel Simon (Manchester, England).
It was not until later, well after 1910 that other English technicians Roy Beck, Charles Peters, Edward Owen began to use photo-emulsion and photosensitive products in the photographic processing of screen exposure.
As a technician and enthusiast of this technology and one who has been following professionally for many years, I feel it is only right that the development work in textile printing of a Spanish painter, artist and inventor, who worked in Venice for many years named Mariano Fortuny Y Madrazo (1871 Grenada, Spain -1949 Venice, Italy) should also be mentioned for fairness from a historical point of view.
His patent was filed in May 1910 with the following title:
?“Improvements in or relating to Printing upon Fabric, Paper and other Material”.?

The polychromatic fabrics, with the addition gold and silver effects, printed with the “Fortuny technology” are to this day still very beautiful and admirable at the “Fortuny Palace museum” in Venice, which I recommend visiting, given the very high level of style, quality and refinement achieved by the eclectic and ingenious Mariano Fortuny.
The truly amazing thing is that the textile printing company that he founded back in 1907 of high-quality textiles and then moved in 1921 to the new factory in the Giudecca sestiere, is still operating and in production in Venice to this day, with in addition, a sales office in New York.???
