Today, we are excited to introduce you to the captivating world of Marga Casta?o. A seasoned creative director turned illustrator, Marga brings a fresh, artistic perspective to commercial projects with her vibrant work. With 15 years of experience as an executive creative director at leading advertising agencies, Marga has now returned to her roots, fully embracing her passion for illustration. Her unique journey and extensive expertise make her a valuable asset to any creative endeavor, blending strategic insight with artistic flair.
Latest Projects
Currently, Marga is collaborating with Heineken and a national magazine for European Music Day. She's also working on sketches for a book cover for Planeta Publishing and a new personal project combining writing, music, and illustration.
From Executive Director to Full-Time Illustrator
"In my case, it was a shift in mindset and a vital need. I went from leading teams to feeling the necessity to create things myself, things that made me happy. I wanted to focus my work on a more artistic side, and in illustration, I found what I was looking for. Even in commercial projects, there is always a personal artistic expression and a unique perspective. I find that beautiful," Marga shares.
Transforming the Streets of Madrid
One of Marga's most thrilling projects was a campaign for the Madrid City Council. Her illustrations filled the streets, and the positive public reaction was overwhelming. "It was truly exciting to see strangers writing to congratulate me and asking where they could get the posters."
An Artistic Journey Rooted in Observation
Marga studied Fine Arts at the University of Salamanca. She captures everyday moments and elevates them to a world of color, blending realism with conceptual or metaphorical elements. Inspired by artists like Alex Katz, David Hockney, and Edward Hopper, she meticulously builds mood boards and sketches to conceptualize her projects.
The Creative Process
"I work on a monochromatic approach in Illustrator, setting up composition, lights, shadows, and atmosphere. After that, I introduce color and refine the shapes. If things aren't coming together, I close the computer, go for a walk, and let movement clear my mind."
Values Reflected in Art
Marga's values shine through in her work. Sensitive to gender issues, environmental concerns, and social justice, she collaborates with brands that share these values. Her illustrations are driven by beauty and visual satisfaction, seeking to create a bond with the observer.
Success and International Collaboration
"Success can be tangible, like winning awards or receiving new projects regularly. But being able to make a living from this is a success in itself. I would love to find new international collaborations, exploring different cultures and perspectives."
Practice and Visibility
Marga believes in constant practice and visibility. "If you don't have commissions, invent them; great opportunities can arise from personal projects." She actively shares her work on platforms like Instagram, Behance, and The Dots.
