MARE People and the Sea Conference at University of Amsterdam, June 26-30, 2023

This year I had the pleasure of attending and presenting at the 22nd MARE People and the Sea Conference #mare23. with Greta A. from BC3 Basque Center for Climate Change. A biannual event at Universiteit van Amsterdam , MARE brings together a diversity of marine social scientists to share and exchange, this year on the topic of Blue Fear.?

Our Panel No.34 Rethinking relationships between technology and knowledge production attracted about 20 participants, and together we examined data-driven environmental modelling in particular as an emergent form of knowledge representation in marine science and the importance of broadening access to marine data and analysis tools.

We wanted more time to discuss with our audience, so we arranged to make shorter talks, and then we had a full 45 minutes to have a conversation. Overall it was an enjoyable session, with some tough questions, curious feedbacks, and insightful comments!

In our own contribution, Technological mediation of existential threats from the deep: a postphenomenological account of marine and coastal knowledge production and its potential impacts on ocean policy. We introduced some topics in marine data science through the lenses of Philosophy of Technology and Postcolonial Computing, elaborating how improving access to environmental data and ICT capacity-building can support sustainable futures in the Global South. We shared our low-cost environmental monitoring technology project www.islandfutures.net/databuoy designed during our first postdoctoral research at ITI/LARSyS?in Madeira, Portugal, as well as?new developments in Greta’s work with ontologies and knowledge elicitation in the project ARIES.

Unfortunately, our third partner in this presentation Marta Pascual could not attend, but we know she was also out there, fighting the good fight for Marine Spatial Planning in the Mediterranean, at a conference in Malta

Thanks everyone for participating and making it such an enlightening event!
