Tell us a bit about what you and your team do on a day-to-day basis.

I’m a Test Technician, based at our Welwyn Garden City facility. I work closely with product design, reliability testing and maintenance teams to improve our products.

I’m part of the Engineering Services team, which designs, tests and manufactures our hardware and software solutions.?

How long have you been working here? And what keeps you here??

I joined Ocado Group in 2008 as a Personal Shopper, working my way up to Area Manager. More recently, I was attracted to the role of a Test Technician as it meant I could be up close with our latest technology. It’s been an exciting journey here, as there’s always something new to keep me on my toes.

What makes your role exciting??

Working so closely with our newest products is irresistible. I get to see how far our products will go and no two days are the same. I collaborate with dozens of teams, combining our knowledge into one big project.

What is the impact of your role on the wider business?

My work is crucial for rigorous testing of our solutions and helping our teams to make improvements for what we can do better.

What’s been your favourite project to work on so far, and why?

It's hard to name just one because they are all equally interesting, although different. I enjoyed testing our 400 Series Bots. It was fascinating to push the limits of new technology - trying new ideas, reporting on tests and making suggestions for improvements. I tested the hardware in terms of things like capacity and speed, alongside how the bots behaved with software changes and updates.

What skills and attributes do you think make for a great Tester?

The biggest misconception is that you need to be technical for a role like this, and that’s not the case as we have lots of technical experts already. You can learn the practical parts of the job during training.

Collaboration and communication skills are essential - for example, explaining why something isn't working as well as it could, or making suggestions for improvements. You need to be comfortable speaking to a range of different people and being able to frame conversations to give the best outcomes.

It helps to have a good eye for detail, too - some minor changes and suggestions during testing can make a big difference to the end product.

What would you say to someone considering joining us as a Tester?

I’d say grab the opportunity with both hands. It’s a great team with varied opportunities and insights into cutting-edge technology. If you’re someone who likes variety and working with a wide range of people, this could be the role for you.
