February Ransomware Roundup
The momentum from January continued with an all-time record for February, with a total of 57 reported attacks, an increase of 43% from 2023.
February saw the temporary takedown of LockBit, which did slow the operation down for a few days, but didn’t stop them from carrying out nine attacks, the same amount as BlackCat.
Unreported attacks were also up, with a 63% increase over 2023. While we expected to see some stabilization in the unreported to reported ratio this month, we saw it increase to 644%, nearly double that of last month. This indicates that many organizations are still not complying with the new SEC incident disclosure rules.
February also saw a high volume of attacks on the government, manufacturing and healthcare sectors with increases of 150%, 114% and 113% respectively. Education sector remained the leading sector with a 43% increase this month.

New Case Study: Lake Dallas ISD??
Having been a previous victim of a ransomware attack, Lake Dallas ISD knows all too well that the external threat from threat actors is real.
With the constant feeling of "firefighting," the Director of Technology knew that he had to look at different solutions to help mitigate the risk of further attacks.
Lake Dallas ISD made the decision to deploy BlackFog to select devices to evaluate the solution and after the trial deployed the platform on a number of additional systems.
When asked if he would recommend BlackFog, Mike Dabney, Director of Technology said " Absolutely. The BlackFog solution has proven to be a great resource in helping protect our data, and I am grateful to have this resource at our disposal."
Where have we been in March?
This year Team BlackFog will be out and about attending a number of key events to share our ADX story.
In March, Adam Beus and Roger Cobb attended CIO Evening Gatherings in both Denver and Salt Lake City while Roger and Mark Rogol attended a CISO Evening Gathering in Boston. These intimate events, hosted by GBI Impact , bring together the local IT community to discuss the top cyber trends and how professionals will utilize technology, process and leadership to gain a competitive advantage.
The team enjoyed spending time networking with other industry professionals.

BlackFog's Ransomware and Cybersecurity Blogs
We have added a number of new blogs to our website, discussing cybersecurity topics, trends and threats facing organizations. Check out some of our newest blogs:
All firms should now understand the importance of effective security defenses. Threats such as ransomware are the biggest worry for organizations in 2024, ahead of business interruption, natural disaster and economic uncertainty.
Solutions such as managed detection and response and dedicated endpoint protection platforms will therefore be a priority for many enterprises this year.
So what should businesses know about these solutions in order to make the best decision for their circumstances?
2023 was a year that saw ransomware continuously break records, and while the usual ?suspects LockBit and BlackCat represented 38% of all reported attacks, we also saw around 29 new ransomware gangs begin operations last year.
We all know of the notorious groups that have been around for a number of years, and are still making headlines with their notable attacks, but it is also important to monitor new and emerging groups in the ransomware landscape.
This year, we’ve decided to track new ransomware gangs and their victims and will keep you updated as and when we discover them.
BlackFog Newsroom
We are often asked to share our thoughts on stories that are making news in the cybersecurity world . Here's a highlight from March:
The FBI's annual cybercrime summary has revealed that it recorded a total of 2,825 ransomware attacks, with costs up 74% on 2022.
14 of the 16 critical infrastructure industries designated by CISA experienced ransomware attacks last year, with healthcare facilities and services were most commonly targeted, followed by manufacturing and government facilities.
BlackFog's CEO and founder Darren Williams told CPO Magazine that although ransomware is still the leading threat, it has become almost secondary to the process of data extortion that we are now seeing in 91% of attacks.
