Dear Valley Village Community,

As we step into March, a month of significant importance for multiple reasons, I reflect on the diverse stories and celebrations shaping our collective experience at Valley Village.?As a male ally, I want to acknowledge the beginning of Women's History Month—a time to celebrate the incredible achievements of women throughout history and within our own community.

It's an opportunity for us all, regardless of gender, to recognize women's invaluable contributions daily. Their strength, intelligence, and compassion are fundamental to our society and organization's progress and richness. This month, let us all commit to being allies in the truest sense, advocating for inclusion, listening to women's voices, and celebrating their successes.

March also brings us together to celebrate Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. This month raises awareness about the inclusion of people with developmental disabilities in all facets of community life and the barriers that people with disabilities still sometimes face in connecting to their communities. In this edition of THRIVE, we spotlight the intersection of creativity, achievement, and advocacy within our community, capturing the essence of life with developmental disabilities.

I also want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated in our 5K run this month. Your dedication as a runner and donor exemplifies the spirit of community and support that Valley Village stands for. Your efforts not only highlight the importance of physical wellness but also reinforce our commitment to raising awareness and funds for those we serve. Your generosity and enthusiasm make a real difference; we are truly grateful.

Wheeling Towards Dignity: New Rule Proposes Enhanced Air Travel for Wheelchair Users

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) proposes a new rule designed to ensure airline passengers who use wheelchairs can travel safely and with dignity.?

This rule aims to address issues such as mishandled wheelchairs and improper transfers between aircraft seats and personal wheelchairs. It defines mishandling as any lost, delayed, damaged, or pilfered assistive devices, marking such mishandling as a per se violation of the Air Carrier Access Act (ACAA). Additionally, it outlines requirements for airlines to provide prompt notifications to passengers about the status of their wheelchairs and ensure their timely return or replacement when mishandled. This initiative underscores the DOT's commitment to improving air travel accessibility and the overall experience for individuals with mobility impairments.
