March Madness : Getting Busy in the Soil
As March rolls in, it's time to dust off those gardening gloves and get ready for a flurry of activity on the site. With spring just around the corner, there's no shortage of tasks to tackle as we prepare our plots for the growing season ahead.
First and foremost, March is prime time for soil preparation. As the ground begins to thaw, it's the perfect opportunity to dig in some well-rotted compost or manure, enriching the soil and providing essential nutrients for our crops. Nourishing the soil not only provides essential nutrients for our crops but also fosters a thriving ecosystem beneath the surface.
Here at Sol Haven? we embrace the no-dig gardening principle, which minimizes soil disturbance and encourages the natural processes of decomposition and soil formation. By adopting this approach, we not only preserve the structure and health of our soil but also reduce the labour-intensive task of digging.
As the days lengthen and temperatures rise, March is also the ideal time to start sowing seeds indoors By getting a head start indoors, we can ensure strong, healthy seedlings ready for transplanting once the risk of frost has passed. From early salad greens and root vegetables to hardy herbs and flowers, there's a myriad of crops to choose from to kickstart the growing season.
For those eager to get their hands dirty outdoors, there are plenty of tasks to keep us busy. From clearing away winter debris and weeding to repairing fences and pathways, there's no shortage of maintenance work to be done around the site.
So as we dive headfirst into March madness let's embrace the opportunity to connect with nature, nurture our plots, and cultivate community spirit. With a little hard work and a lot of passion, we'll soon be reaping the rewards of our labour as our gardens burst into life once more.
Happy Gardening!
