March is Reading Month

For Lenawee's health, happiness, and hope. Now and forever.
“Mommy, will you ‘weed’ a book to me”? I can still hear my son’s voice from so long ago as if it were yesterday.?There was nothing like cuddling up with my three-year-old to enjoy a good book. Together we would dive into adventures with a big red dog or little engines that believed they could. Looking down at his brown eyes sparkling with wonder, I would marvel at the way we are all created to enjoy a good story.?My son relished our story times, but what he didn’t realize as a little one, is how reading and stories are actually critical to child development and sets kids up for success.
Throughout the month of March, kids across Lenawee County are doing a lot more reading because March is Reading Month! ?Local elementary schools and educators are hosting guest readers for their students. They are holding fun contests and special events to foster and encourage a healthy love for reading! ?The extra emphasis on reading in March boosts awareness for everyone of how important reading proficiency is for future success in school and life.??
Outside of the classroom, March is Reading Month provides a great reminder to get out a good book and read to the young people in your life. ?When you read to a young person, you’re taking them on journeys to different times and places and expanding their horizons. Reading to a child helps build their future and gives them one-on-one attention that is unmatched by any other activity. In fact, reading to children is the single most important thing you can do to contribute to their future reading success.
With March being National Reading Month, the Lenawee Community Foundation is highlighting an exciting program we facilitate locally called The Imagination Library.?By providing Lenawee children a new, age-appropriate book each month from birth to age five, your Foundation is fostering a love of reading among young children and their families.?
Your local Imagination Library is powered by supporters like you.?To learn how you can make a positive difference in the life of a child, please ?contact the Lenawee Community Foundation at 517-263-4696 or email [email protected].
