March, like a lion

Last week, as I sat watching the snow fall in New Jersey on the second day of Spring, the fourth Nor’easter of March was roaring in - leading to yet another wave of flight cancellations and school snow days. Winter storms like we’ve had recently in the Northeast are both beautiful and chaotic at the same time. While I hope what they say about March…in like a lion, out like a lamb…is true from a weather standpoint, it’s hard not to be in awe of Mother Nature’s power and ferocity.
Sometimes, work can feel like the Nor’easters that just keep coming. Busy periods can stack up back-to-back like snow piling on top of snow. It can become overwhelming. When you’re tired and the work won’t stop seemingly falling from the sky, how can you maintain momentum and see things through to successful completion? How can you maintain your edge and keep a high level of performance? How can you stay sharp and fierce when you are completely exhausted? Here’s my take…
Stay Positive: A positive attitude can help you avoid unproductive cycles and slumps in performance. You have to be mentally tough and focus on the underlying opportunity ahead. It’s nearly impossible to win if you are overly focused on the possibility of losing. We cannot focus on things we cannot control (like the snow); we can only impact what we choose to do and how we react to the situation. Find the positives, envision the win, and make the most of the situation.
Keep Moving: Take one day at a time and keep moving forward. As long as you are progressing, you will get there. Determine what you need to get done and attack the day. Stay focused and see things through; try not to start so many things that you cannot complete anything. Hiding under a blanket to watch the storm pass is only okay at home on lazy Sunday afternoons. Don’t let fear or uncertainty or exhaustion stop you from marching toward your goals. Slow progress is still progress. Just keep on going!
Breathe: Take a deep breathe, pause and reflect on your progress. Squeeze a quick workout in to energize your mind and body. Be mindful of your stress level during busy times and how it may impact your health and those around you. Take time to celebrate small victories along the way, and remember... you can do this. You are a lion on top of the mountain - no lambs here - you’ve got this!
March is the month we are reminded that whatever doesn’t kill us makes us stronger. May you all march into Spring as stronger, more focused and more productive versions of yourself. And, at the very least, take comfort in knowing that “no coat weather” is right around the corner. Hang in there!

6 年Jennifer I read your material that you write here pretty often, for two reasons. One, I find it extremely informative, and exceptionally motivational. Two, I continue to find rewarding and fullfilling meaningful things to keep me engaged in both the business world and in life in general. You see, I am a retired AT&T manager. I still have those wonder memories of the great times spent there. Assignments in the Carolina's, South Florida, Atlanta, NYC, New Jersey, and the D.C. area. Recently closed deal in the network arena. Active in my church, and 2018-19 President of my local Rotary Club. Keep up the great information sharing, we look forward to reading it ! I will be 80 this summer, and look forward to continue to stay busy and active. Thank you, Norris Hoovet
