March to the Beat

March to the Beat

Yes, we are in the month of March, a verb.

Two big events that I like to acknowledge are

1) Women’s History Month and 2) March Madness

Let’s begin with Women’s History Month and March to the beat!

There is a lot of buzz on social media about the value of women and how we can make a difference in the lives of others, and I love that.?

How do you celebrate women at your workplace??

Here are some facts:?

  • Women are compensated .87 for every $1.00 men make (on average)
  • Women get fewer promotions than men
  • Women receive less feedback at work than men
  • Women are underrepresented in the C-Suite-25% are women and 5% women of color
  • Women are 1.5X’s more likely to switch jobs because their workload was unmanageable
  • 1 in 10 women want to work on site, and put another way, 9 out of 10 women want to have flexibility on where they work

(Sources: Gallup, Harvard Business Review, Lean In)

There is a lot to pay attention to and unpack. Yes, some progress has been made and there is still a lot that needs to be done.?

What does it mean to you personally?

When I think of the women in my personal life two women who were the biggest influencers in my life were my mom, Charlotte and my Grandma, Bethel.

As I reflect on them, and how they molded my character I hear my mom (who’s been gone now for 26 years) saying words that lift me up and push me.

  • “Keep your chin up”?she’d tell me if I was disappointed or sad.?
  • "You can do whatever you put your mind to”?she’d say when I was ready to start a new project, job, or business.?
  • “Think good thoughts”?were her very last words to me and let me tell you when I catch my thoughts going down a wrong path, I feel her nudge to stop the negative thoughts, and course correct to possibility thinking.

I grew up in Denver CO, and my grandparents lived in a tiny little town called Cherryvale, KS. Several of my cousins and I spent the summers with them and it holds so many cherished memories in my heart.??

  • My grandma was a large and joyful woman who had those big arms that hang down and we loved playing with them by shaking them.???
  • Everyone in town knew her and loved her. We’d ride our bikes to the corner store called?Conrads?and she always gave us a little extra month to buy candy.
  • ??“Lord Willing”?was one of her many statements of wisdom. She guided us to never take anything for granted.

Who are the special women in your life that you want to celebrate this month? I was so happy (and surprised) when my oldest son, Evan, sent me a text on March 8 for International Women’s History Day and called me the G.O.A.T. (greatest of all time)!

I encourage you to?March?to the?special heartbeat????that women provide in your work life and personal life and acknowledge them for the uniqueness they bring.

Now let’s talk about?March Madness- The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat! Already, a #16 seeded team (Farleigh Dickinson) beat a #1 team (Purdue)!!!?

I love sports because it teaches us so much about life.

The significance of preparation

  • The importance to set goals and train to achieve our mission.
  • How to commit and persevere through tough times and push to the finish line or time runs out.
  • How to appreciate each person’s individual talents and roles and coming together as a team to achieve a unified purpose.
  • The value of a fantastic coach and well thought out game plan

How do you lead your team at work?

  • What does your huddle look like and sound like??Do you guide them to keep pushing or become annoyed and frustrated when they’re not winning? As I watched FL Atlantic beat Memphis, I noticed the coach of FL Atlantic kept smiling at their team the whole game no matter what the scoreboard said. The Memphis team were fighting each other and at the end, the coach threw his water bottle. Guess who won---FL Atlantic!
  • How do you?share the vision?and apply their role to vision achievement?
  • Do you?offer your “bench” an opportunity?to participate in activities or tasks that they may not normally be able to participate in? (BTW, this ties into opportunities women want and too often don’t get.)
  • How do you?Inspire your team?to appreciate their similarities and differences?

I encourage you to March to win with your team!???
