2023 outcomes show that Wyman's programs positively impact young people
Adolescence can be a period of significant challenges. It is also a time of extraordinary growth and development. As experts in youth development, we implement proven programs to support teens during this pivotal time.? We are pleased to share with you that the young people we serve are making meaningful progress that will have a lifetime of impact. In 2023,?1,670 young people?participated in Wyman’s three direct service programs –?Wyman Leaders, the?Teen Outreach Program? (TOP?), and the?Teen Connection Project? (TCP?).
We extend our reach through?over 70 partnerships locally and across the country?to serve?more than 3,000 young people?in the St. Louis area, and?more than 30,000 young people?across the country.
Research across all three of our programs shows that they?positively impact youth well-being, skill building, and educational success. And we are excited to share our 2023 direct service outcomes with you.
Prioritizing social connections through the Teen Connection Project
Imagine if all young people felt empowered to express their feelings to peers, and then experienced those peers taking action to support them.
That is what happens in the Teen Connection Project (TCP).?In TCP, young people are presented with a supportive environment, caring adults, the opportunity to take healthy risks, and a safe environment to open up and connect with each other.?And they are leaning into that opportunity with enthusiasm.
The?U.S. Surgeon General, the?Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and other experts in the field all agree – we need to offer more opportunities for young people to connect with their peers, their schools, and their communities.?
Several years ago, Wyman and Dr. Joseph Allen,?Hugh P. Kelly Professor of Psychology (University of Virginia), identified the need?for more support for teens in this area and partnered to develop the Teen Connection Project (TCP). Read our newest blog - co-authored by Dr. Joseph Allen and Crystal Smith, Director of the Teen Connection Project at Wyman - to learn more about TCP and how it is helping teens build positive connections and become more engaged at school.
How it works: Effective partnerships to support equity in degree completions
Partnerships are critical to the work that we do, and our higher education partnerships allow for deep collaboration, resources, and support that lead to postsecondary success for young people.
In collaboration with Dr. Florian Sichling at UMSL, Wyman explored?our existing partnerships with five higher education institutions.?The overall aim was to deepen our understanding of effective practices within these partnerships — the collaborative practices and supports that lead to postsecondary success for young people.?
