March 2024: Women's Day Celebrations, #BeBrave, IBC Hackathon, and More!
Karnataka is currently experiencing a heatwave due to an early onset of summer this year. In fact, the state breached the 40-degree celsius mark yesterday, leading IMD (India Meteorological Department) to issue a heatwave alert in six districts. Bengalureans, like the rest of the state, are grappling with a water shortage crisis. With drought-like conditions prevailing in many parts of the state, the daily lives of Bengalureans and others have been severely impacted. We hope that the city will recover soon, especially with a few spells of rain predicted in early April.
But on to some positive news - our home team Royal Challengers Bengaluru won their maiden title in the second edition of the Women's Premier League, with an eight-wicket victory over Delhi Capitals! To learn more about how the club went from finishing last in the inaugural edition of the tournament to clinching the title the very next year, watch this interesting documentary. Meanwhile, their male counterparts will be hoping to do the same in the 16th edition of the Indian Premier League – something that Bengalureans have eagerly awaited to witness since the inception of this tournament.
In the office, we celebrated our Women colleagues and their achievements throughout the month. The Women in Technology (W!T) team organized an event featuring key messages from our women leaders, a captivating performance of classical Indian music by the Each One Educate One Foundation , and fun activities like pictionary and bollywood dance. Our Women's Career Network in APAC hosted the inaugural edition of the WCN Awards, held along the sidelines of #InternationalWomensDay, aimed at celebrating Sabre’s exceptional women and men who empower, elevate, encourage, support, and inspire Sabre’s women employees. We are ecstatic that Bengaluru team members secured four out of the six awards this year! Click here to check out all the winners.
Furthermore, we marked Women’s History Month with two leaders sharing their inspiring stories as part of the ‘Shifting the Conversation’ series. Bindu Surendran recounted her journey from starting as a check-in agent in India to transitioning into the technology sector, highlighting challenges such as balancing work and family, navigating a male-dominated industry, and coping with personal tragedies. Rency Mathew shared her experience of growing up overshadowed by her brother who was a math whiz, facing unwarranted comparisons from teachers, but ultimately defying expectations by excelling in the field of HR and embracing her individuality. She encourages others facing similar challenges to define their own path, seek support, and measure success on their own terms. We also published various stories, videos, and articles on #IWD2024, which are listed in the sections below.
At Sabre, we encourage our team to think innovatively and aim to surpass expectations, fostering the courage and determination to tackle challenges head-on and to push past limitations. We asked a few of our team members what the Sabre values mean to them, and they had some powerful messages to share. Over the next several months we will share a few such messages with you through our social channels. Each month we celebrate one Sabre value, and March was devoted to #BeBrave. Here’s a video featuring Goria Mehta ( goria mehta ) , who talks about what being brave means to her. Not just this, we had several engagement initiatives conducted in the office this month, to encourage our team members to be brave. A glimpse from one such activity, below.
