The AnalystX and future NHS team headed to Digital Health Rewired at Birmingham’s NEC in March, where we were thrilled to share a stand with the FutureNHS team right by the busy AI, Data, and Analytics Stage.

The AnalystX community was in the spotlight during Tuesday’s panel discussion led by Hassan Chaudhury HonFAPM titled “AnalystX Community: Building a vibrant NHS data analytics collaborative community”.? Hassan was joined by Dr Rupert Dunbar-Rees , CEO of Outcomes Based Health and an AnalystX strategic partner as well as ZhiQian Huang , AnalystX Process Mining Community Lead and Chief Impact Officer and Co-founder of Logan Tod & Co.

Thanks to all those who stopped by the AnalystX stand to learn more about the national competency framework and getting involved in AnalystX Communities. We loved getting to meet community members, data professionals, and partners from across the country.

Workforce Professionalisation

Sarah Blundell Andy Lavelle

The National Competency Framework new adopter’s network continues to meet every fortnight, each week onboarding new adopters into the network. There are now 36 organisations in the process of adopting the NCF. To support these adopters existing tools have been revised, and new tools created, to support manager oversight and evidence portfolio development. All our adopters can be found on the National Competency Framework homepage in AnalystX.

All events, meetings and working groups supporting the adoption of the NCF can be found on the? NCF Events and Training calendar.

?AnalystX Observatory has uploaded key findings from the 2023 survey to AnalystX. Plans for 2024 have changed due to the England-wide roll out of the Digital Skills Development Network’s DDaT workforce census. To avoid unnecessary burden and duplication, the Observatory will shift to focus groups that deep dive into the topics highlighted in the last two surveys. More information on the plans can be found in our latest article.

Past Huddles

February and March were full of some fantastic Huddles from a variety of speakers. Our most recent session on 19 March concluded our 3-part Federated Data Platform series. This final session focused on the Federated Data Platform as a programme looking at the programme’s approach, including products rolled out, the benefits they offer, and what else the system can expect from the programme. Recordings of these sessions are available here.

Michael Williams Assistant Director of Architecture in NHSE, Anand Wilbert Assistant Director of Data Engineering, NHSE and Tom Bullimore Policy and Strategy Manager NHSE joined AnalystX huddles on the 20th of February and delved into the second part of the Federated Data Platform which focused on the platform’s analytical capabilities and data models. More details here.

On 27 February, Andrew Sylvester and Toby Lowton discussed evidence for the impact of Electronic Patient Record systems and early findings on inpatient sepsis mortality rates and reducing average non-elective inpatient length of stay. This was a collaborative piece of work with an academic partner Giuseppe Moscelli in applying a methodology which measured causal impacts where a policy intervention is staggered over time. Watch this space for the publication of this piece of work later on in the year. More details here.

Women in Data event powered by Snowflake

NHS England staff Mridula Sori and Camellia Williamson joined the Snowflake sponsored "Healthcare Gap Session" at Women in Data on 7th March. The session examined and?discussed the?main barriers that organisations face when trying to adopt a data-driven approach to address health inequalities?"

Adoption - Skillset - Mind set - Tech debt?

?

Adoption is a real concern - how many programmes have failed due to lack of adoption?

Skillset : Analyst X which is a community of 19,500 analysts is helping equip data scientists and analysts with skills via its strategic partner network. The National Competency framework also an NHS England initiative has designed a core set of competencies to allow for career progression in the NHS.

Mind set : Fear - a real fear of migrating to the cloud that it will expose patient level data. There has been much in the press about the NHS selling data which has fueled public concerns regarding migrating to the cloud and sharing data,

At the centre of evidence based decision making is data sharing. It should come as no surprise that a joint call to action was issued on 27th September 2023 from the National Data Guardian (Dr Nicola Bryne) the Information commissioner (John Edwards) and the Chief Medical Officer for England (Chris Whitty) that health and care staff must share information effectively to support individual’s care.?

Tech Debt : This really can not continue there are far too many legacy systems in central NHS and also in Trusts. This is placing a huge financial burden on the NHS coupled with this these systems can not integrate with other systems. It is difficult to get data out to get any meaningful insights.?

First digital maturity ratings published in July 2023 published by HSJ revealed that out of 41 ICS only 3 ICS scored 3 or higher out of 5. These were Frimley, Suffolk and North East Essex and West Yorkshire. There is still a great deal of work to do - ICS’s can learn from each other on best practice and implementation.?
