Matt’s Take On Current Conditions:

“There continues to be a struggle between employers and employees over hybrid/remote roles. Currently, we are not seeing employers bend on their desire to get employees into the office. This will be a battle of attrition, who can last the longest?? The employer who needs to fill a position or a potential employee without a paycheck?? Today, I would argue that local employers are winning.“

Key Updates – National News Impacting Employment/Hiring

  • Job postings in sectors with the highest share of remote-eligible roles were down 8% from pre-pandemic levels as of Feb. 16. But in-person work remains in demand:?As of Feb. 16, postings in sectors with low or medium shares of remote-eligible roles were each up 27% from their pre-pandemic baselines?(Indeed Hiring Lab)?
  • Franklin Templeton’s Voice of the American Workplace Survey?found that 91% of employers experienced turnover rates exceeding 10% in 2023. (FranklinTempleton)
  • In December 2019 part time jobs accounted for 43% of all hourly jobs, in December 2023 it jumped to 47%; Additionally, in that same time frame US hourly workers have dropped their median number of hours worked from 38.4 hours to 37.7 hours. (ADPRI)
  • Nearly 50% of manufacturing employees cite flexibility as a reason they stay with their employer, with 63.5% reporting that they would look for more flexibility in their next role if they were to leave their current company. (NAM)
  • 55% reported hiring or trying to hire in January, unchanged from December. Forty-nine percent (89% of those hiring or trying to hire) of owners reported few or no qualified applicants for the positions they were trying to fill (unchanged). (NFIB)
  • Manufacturing activity expanded at the fastest pace since September 2022. New orders grew at a rate not seen since May of 2022 and exports and output both rebounded following two months of declines. (NAM)

Local Data Impacting The Jobs/Employment Market

  • In Tampa Bay - Wages are not keeping pace with the cost of living, making earning a college degree a financial necessity. Consider these two data points: 79% of jobs that pay more than $60,000 require a college degree. And a family of four with two kids in childcare must earn at least $82,348 to make ends meet. (USF)
  • According to Paychex, Tampa saw the largest drop in weekly hours in the metro’s they track with a drop of 1.05% year over year. (Paychex)
  • In a year over year comparison of online job ads, Pinellas County had 23,520 posted jobs in January of 2023, In January of 2024 they had 20,672. Hillsborough had 42,295 in January of 2023 and 34,978 in January of 2024. (Florida Insight)
