March 2024- International Day of the Woman Theme:- Invest in Women and Accelerate Progress

Ladies and gentlemen, section members of the International Society for Human Rights (ISHR),

I am honored to address you today on behalf of the Secretariat, and to share insights into the indispensable role that women play as human rights defenders globally. As we convene to discuss the crucial issues facing our world, let us focus on the incredible impact that women defenders have on their communities, the unique challenges they face, and our steadfast commitment to advancing the gender agenda within the ISHR.

Women human rights defenders are the catalysts for positive change in their communities. Their work is not just a testament to their courage but is also instrumental in shaping societies. From advocating for gender equality and reproductive rights to championing social and economic justice, their influence extends far beyond the immediate, creating ripples of transformation.Yet, it is imperative to acknowledge the distinct challenges women human rights defenders confront compared to their male counterparts. Discrimination, violence, and societal expectations create formidable obstacles that require our collective attention and action.

As the ISHR, we are keenly aware of these challenges and are committed to providing a platform for the voices of women human rights defenders to be heard and amplified. Our commitment to the gender agenda is evident in the composition of our board. We take pride in the significant number of accomplished women who contribute their expertise, passion, and dedication to our organization. This representation is not just symbolic; it reflects our commitment to fostering diversity, inclusivity, and equality within the ISHR. In alignment with our dedication to gender inclusivity, I am thrilled to announce our renewed focus on the Ambassador Cohort program. Historically, the program has been predominantly male-oriented. However, this year, encouraging women to participate is our top priority. We believe that amplifying the voices of women in this program is essential for a more holistic and effective approach to human rights advocacy.

March is not only a month to celebrate women; it's an opportunity to spotlight women human rights defenders globally through our social media campaign. I encourage each member of this esteemed sections and network to recommend outstanding women in their communities. By leveraging our platform, we aim to tell their stories, inspire others, and contribute to the global discourse on human rights.

Furthermore, we recognize the vital role of youth and the girl child in the human rights space. Investing in them is an investment in the future of our mission. The ISHR is committed to knowledge sharing and network creation, providing avenues for the younger generation to contribute meaningfully to the human rights cause. This commitment aligns seamlessly with this year's International Women's Day theme, "Invest in women and accelerate progress." In the context of human rights, investing in women is not just a moral imperative but a strategic necessity. Empowering women human rights defenders accelerates progress towards a more just, equal, and rights-respecting world. In closing, let us reaffirm our dedication to the principles of the ISHR, celebrating the impact of women in the human rights space and committing ourselves to a future where the contributions of women are not just recognized but integral to our shared mission. Thank you for your attention and unwavering commitment to human rights.
