Is everybody ok? Last week was wild.
The fall of Silicon Valley Bank was a remarkable treatise on the complexity of leading when all our systems and fates are intertwined. From the bank we saw examples of short-sighted strategy, badly timed communications, and low organizational resilience. Outside the bank, we saw people in positions of power wield it to accelerate the bank’s failure, without much consideration for who might be hurt (but likely a lot of consideration for who might profit). Setting a good strategy is a challenge, predicting the future is impossible, and it’s especially hard to price irresponsible (or just bad) actors into the market. Perhaps all we can count on going forward is volatility.
That means the old leadership toolkit for “command and control” is no longer useful. If we want to future-proof our skills and tools as leaders, then we need a toolkit for personal and organizational resilience.?
