March 2023

Welcome back to our newsletter,

We hope you’re keeping well. Spring is officially upon us and we’re counting down the days until Bowel Cancer Awareness Month begins in April. We can’t wait to share our exciting plans for the month with you.

Make sure you’re following us on social media (@bowelcanceruk) to stay up-to-date with all of our latest news. And of course we’ll be emailing you about our planned activities and the many different ways you can get involved as soon as the month begins!

In the meantime we’ve got some exciting research and campaigning news to share, a new online support event to tell you about and ways you can get involved with our work.

Petition hand in at No.10

Our Chief Executive, Genevieve Edwards with various members of staff from other cancer charities holding the One Cancer Voice petition for Rishi Sunak.

A year ago, the Government launched a 'national war on cancer'. We were promised an ambitious 10-Year Cancer Plan to make England's cancer care the 'best in Europe'. That plan was scrapped.

Last month, along with over 60 cancer charities as part of One Cancer Voice, we launched a petition telling the Prime Minister Rishi Sunak that it’s time to address the cancer emergency and put patients first.

Over 75,000 people joined our call for a long-term cancer plan. Yesterday cancer charities, patients and Members of Parliament joined together to hand in our petition at No. 10. Thank you to each and every one of you who signed the petition. We await a response from the Prime Minister.

Our investment in research

Teal background with white text in the centre. The text is a quote from our Director of Research and External Affairs at Bowel Cancer UK, Dr Lisa Wilde. Dr Wilde says: "We want to secure a future where most people are diagnosed at the earliest stage; investing in research is one of the best ways to do this."?

We’re delighted to announce that we’ve awarded grants worth over £93,000 to four new research projects for 2023. All of the projects are aimed at increasing early diagnosis of bowel cancer.

The four funded projects will cover:

  • improving the effectiveness of bowel cancer screening
  • looking at ways to support more people to complete the screening test
  • surgeries to prevent cancer in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) who have an increased risk of developing bowel cancer
  • looking at the probability of cancer spread in patients with early-stage bowel cancer, which could lead in the future to earlier diagnosis and improved treatment options for bowel cancer patients

We're thrilled to be supporting these excellent new research projects, which have the potential to turn the tide on early bowel cancer diagnosis – saving more lives. We'll be following their progress with great interest. Stay tuned for further updates on their work.

Help us raise awareness by booking an awareness talk

On the left side of the image, is a coffee mug. On the right side, is an open laptop. On the screen, there is a video call, so there are lots of different people's faces on the screen.

Our team of volunteers deliver free online bowel cancer awareness talks to workplaces and community groups in all four nations of the UK. Many of our volunteers have a personal connection to bowel cancer.

To book a bespoke talk for your business, organisation, or community group of 20 people or more, simply fill out our booking form on our website. If you'd like the talk to take place during Bowel Cancer Awareness Month this April, please fill out the form by Friday 31 March.

Next month we’re also hosting talks via Eventbrite. These are open to everyone, so you can get involved no matter how small your group, or even as an individual. Free tickets will be available up until the events take place.

Introducing our new online support event: Having investigations for bowel cancer

We know that being referred for medical investigations and waiting for test results can be stressful and worrying. Knowing what to expect can help you feel more in control. If you’ve joined our newsletter because you’re worried about symptoms or you’re having tests for bowel cancer, or you know someone going through this at the moment, there’s support available for you.

Join us on Wednesday 26 April, 7-8pm, on Zoom where our specialist speakers will take you through what to expect if you visit your GP with symptoms, and what tests you might have if you're referred to hospital. There will also be the opportunity to ask questions at the event.

We have lots of recordings from previous events that you can catch up with on demand. Past events cover a range of topics from living well with a stoma, bowel cancer in younger people, advanced bowel cancer to supporting each other through a cancer diagnosis.

B&M joins our #GetOnARollCampaign

Grey background with images of loo rolls. Over the top of this is the text which says: "Bowel Cancer UK and B&M partner to #GetOnARoll"?

B&M are the latest household name to be adding information about the symptoms of bowel cancer to their own brand packaging. The discount retailer was inspired to get on board after one of their store colleagues, Jayne, was diagnosed with bowel cancer.

We’re delighted to welcome them to our list of retailers who are supporting the campaign. If you’re reading this and would like to get your workplace involved in our campaign, please get in touch with our friendly partnerships team on [email protected]

Help save lives. Share your story with us

On the right is a picture of Hannah, her husband Michael and their son. To the left is a quote from Hannah which says: "I'm telling our story, because, despite how difficult it is to relive, I want people to look out for early signs and symptoms [...] these are key to early detection and saving lives."?

Whether you have personal experience of bowel cancer, or through a family member or friend, sharing your story with us can help educate people about signs and symptoms, encourage screening uptake, increase understanding of what treatment involves, and inspire others who are affected by the disease.

By raising awareness of bowel cancer and the work we do, we can reach more people and help save more lives. Share your story now.
