INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S MONTH
MARCH MONTHLY EVENT?
Poverty Has a Woman’s Face:?
Exploring Economic Independence
As March is Women’s Month, AWiB in recognition of this yearly grand cause shares HER platform with women’s organizations in Ethiopia with the intention of bringing out leadership, creativity, and sustainability concepts to model the way. This year, we turn our attention to the persistent challenge women face – poverty.
Poverty, at its core, is not solely the lack of income; it extends back to lack of opportunities, choices, and power. Its impact on women is felt globally, affecting millions of individuals.?
UN Women’s theme for International Women’s Day 2024 is “Count Her In: Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress”. AWiB in celebrating this month introduces “Poverty has a Woman’s Face: Exploring Economic Independence”. When a majority of women are living in poverty or are economically dependent, it inevitably has economic implications for the country as well.?

PINNACLE
AWiB’s Mirror: My Journey Beneath the Surface
“I always made sure I was invisible. But I didn’t know that by “protecting myself from the world” I was harming myself more than anyone ever could.”
Four years ago, I penned those words in AWiB’s December 2019 Pinnacle titled AWiB Internship Program. Reflecting on that period, I remember the mindset I hid, descending deeper into a self-destructive cycle of self-loathing and self-sabotage. During my two-year tenure at AWiB, I acquired a wealth of knowledge that remained dormant in my mind, largely untapped and unutilized. Leaving AWiB in January 2021, I ventured into the professional world, achieving visible accomplishments. However, I was wrestling with immeasurable struggles beneath the surface, many of which I kept hidden from others. The Kerry of that time was on a journey rooted in depression and a persistent sense of hopelessness. What ultimately pulled me from that abyss were friends who stood by me when I had given up on myself, and invaluable insights gleaned from AWiB—be it from mentors, colleagues, fellow members, or the various sessions I had participated in.

Historically, elite and powerful women in Ethiopia have been visible as administrators and warriors. This never translated into any benefit to improve the rights of women. Being a woman in Ethiopia can be a hardship, especially for women born in rural areas. Some of the daily tasks of these women include fetching water from rivers and streams; walking long distances carrying food, water, and firewood; cooking, raising children, and being a nurturing mother and wife. Hence, a woman’s worth is measured in terms of her role both as a mother and wife.
Over 85% of Ethiopian women reside in rural areas, where households are engaged primarily in agriculture. In the countryside, women are integrated into the rural economy, which is often labor-intensive and exacts a heavy physical toll on all, including children.

On Valentine’s Day and the Feeling of Left Behind
Sitting on the eve of Valentine’s Day, I am already imagining and anticipating the joy and celebration, and the pain and sorrow this day is set to inflict upon others. I don’t even need to imagine, all I should do is hop on social media and see, just see the unfurling of the gift exchanges and the proposals, and the ‘who would I have been without you’ posts for millions to see. Why aren’t those messages exchanged privately as they were intended? I will never know. But I can take a guess. They are probably motivated partly by conformity: well, everyone seems to be doing it, partly to send a message to their exes or enemies or perceived enemies: look where I am now sucker, or simply to share their joy with others and I am trying to be generous here.
