It is a Marathon, not a Sprint: Getting that Foundation Right

It is a Marathon, not a Sprint: Getting that Foundation Right

In today's fast-evolving landscape, embracing Digital Transformation isn't just a choice; it's a fundamental necessity. Successful organizations are those that embrace agility, resilience, and forward-thinking approaches. At Singapore Post , our journey into the digital realm has highlighted a fundamental truth: digital transformation is a marathon, not a sprint. To succeed on this path, we've honed our focus on four key pillars: Data Capabilities, Cybersecurity and Data Protection, IT Infrastructure, and People.

1. Data Capabilities: Data stands as the lifeblood of the digital age. Its potential to invigorate businesses is unparalleled. As we embarked on our digital transformation journey, one thing became abundantly clear – optimizing our data capabilities is paramount. Collecting the right data, ensuring it's structured and accessible, and leveraging its insights is a collective effort that reverberates across all facets of our organization. Neglecting this pillar can profoundly affect our strategic response, planning, and execution.

2. Cybersecurity and Data Protection: With great data power comes an even greater responsibility – safeguarding sensitive information and preserving customer trust. Ensuring the security of our digital assets demands a village. Protecting the entire ecosystem, including our supply chain partners, is imperative. The strategies we implement must fortify the digital realm collectively.

3. IT Infrastructure: A robust IT infrastructure serves as the bedrock of digital transformation. Is your technological foundation sufficiently sturdy to support your ambitions? Navigating infrastructure challenges and ensuring it remains agile, future-proofed, and aligned with your business strategy and growth plan is critical.

4. People: The most important of them all. People form the driving force behind any transformation. Engaging your workforce and equipping them to adapt to new technologies is central. It's easy to claim that no one will be left behind, but do all members of the organization perceive this transformation as a genuine opportunity for upskilling and career advancement?

With these four key pillars firmly in place, you'll be better poised to shift your focus towards more advanced topics like analytics, automation, and GenAI. However, without these foundational elements, you risk falling into the trap of developing technology solutions merely for the sake of technology, rather than for the value they can bring to your organization. Linking digitalization investments back to key business imperatives is a must, involving metrics like increased revenue, cost reduction, and improved customer and employee experiences.

Remember, this is a marathon. Introducing a new technological solution is just one part of the journey. The true essence lies in cultivating a digital-first mindset across your entire organization – a culture where everyone continually seeks ways to enhance tasks, making them faster, better, and more cost-effective. This journey thrives on continuous improvement and iterations. It's a transformational culture, not a project with a defined scope and end date. We are living in this transformative journey, and it's a path that requires us to challenge ourselves to do better every single day.

Considering all of this, much like in a traditional marathon, there are occasions during your journey where you'll need to engage in short bursts of effort. Whether it's to regain lost ground, make significant progress, or for other valid reasons, these occasional sprints are also an essential part of your transformation journey. They serve the purpose of boosting your confidence and demonstrating progress to your stakeholders. However, it's crucial to strike a balance, as allocating all your energy to these sprints can divert your focus from the primary objective, which is the long-distance marathon.

Please share your thoughts and experiences of your own journey, a collective insight of the diverse approaches we’ve adopted would surely help all of us in running this marathon.

Thanks for the article Noel… I subscribe every word! - there is NO “Fast-track” to digital transformation. Once the right fundations are there… the journey is limitless.

You are right, the fundamental truth is that digital transformation is a marathon not a sprint. Like a marathon runner we need to build resiliency and we need to focus on the end past the finish tape. If you are going to be successful then the underpinning hard work needs to be done. Too often we think that we can cut corners on one of these pillars and I am afraid it always bites back later. We talk about people, processes, data and technology however an awful lot of people think they can jump straight to the technology. That way leads to tears! The challenge is always keeping people's eyes focused on the prize and what it's going to take to reach that prize. Every successful marathon runner has a plan. Sometimes that is difficult in IT because we are often spending a lot of our time fire fighting. We are heros keeping the lights on. However, we also need to invest that time on the capabilities that will win the prize. Thank you Noel H. Singgih for these thoughts.

Many organizations want to jump to the “advanced” mode without going through or strengthening the foundation. Glad to see Singapore Post focuses on the foundational elements the past 12 months. Now time to tun faster and further!

Thanks for sharing Noel, I echo the same sentiment that mindset is key and often the most underlooked in several digital transformation marathons.
