The Marathon of Life: Lessons from Sports, Startups, and the Pursuit of Excellence
As the Olympics 2024 is in full swing, I reflected on these powerful words I encountered during my flight from the US to India.
“The essential thing in life is not conquering but fighting well.” — Pierre de Coubertin, Founder of the Modern Olympics
As I read these words in KLM Royal Dutch Airlines ’s in-flight magazine, Holland Herald, they resonated deeply with me. They brought back memories of my sports journey and its parallels with my startup experience. Sports have taught me invaluable lessons about discipline, resilience, and the long-term perspective needed to navigate life's challenges.
?? The Beginning: A Journey Born from Boredom
Nearly a decade ago, my life turned unexpectedly when Zoho moved its office to the city's outskirts. Isolated from the hustle and bustle, boredom set in. As someone who was never particularly athletic, I stumbled into cycling, initially to kill time and shed some weight. Little did I know that this simple act would ignite a passion for endurance sports, fundamentally transforming my life.
What began as casual bike rides evolved into long-distance cycling, known as Randonneuring. The discipline required to complete distances within specific time limits mirrored the structured approach I later adopted in my professional life, which wasn't just about physical activity; the meticulous planning, dietary changes, and rest fueled my progress.
??The Peak: Finding Purpose and Pushing Limits
Between 2018 and 2020, I was at my physical and mental peak. Completing Half-Marathons, Triathlons, and even an Ultra-Marathon was exhilarating.
The pinnacle of this journey was participating in the The IRONMAN Group 70.3 in Goa. I trained under a coach, Raghul Sankaranarayanan , for the first time, committing three to four hours daily for nine months. This period was transformative, not just for my physical health but also for my mental clarity.

I discovered that a well-rounded approach, combining training, proper nutrition, and rest, led to profound personal growth. My autoimmune condition, which had plagued me for years, began to improve. Achieving top results at my age wasn't just a victory; it was a testament to the power of resilience and the importance of understanding one's body and mind.
?? The Challenge: A Detour from the Path
With the onset of the pandemic in 2020, life took a challenging turn. The global crisis and the pressures of launching a startup derailed my focus on health. The rigorous demands of building a business from scratch consumed me, and I neglected the practices that brought me stability and joy. My physical health deteriorated, and old health issues resurfaced more aggressively than before.
Yet, these challenges were a harsh reminder of the importance of balance. Like in sports, the startup journey is fraught with ups and downs. The same resilience and long-term mindset that guided me through endurance sports became crucial in navigating the uncertainties of entrepreneurship.
??? The Reflection: Connecting the Dots and Moving Forward
As I reflect on this journey, Marjan Rintel (CEO, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines )'s quote, "Veering off the beaten path is also a way of pushing the limits," resonates strongly. In sports and startups, the path less traveled often leads to the most significant growth. It's not just about reaching the top but understanding the value of the journey, the learning, and the perseverance it requires.
The parallels between sports and startups are striking. Both demand high discipline, a willingness to embrace failure, and an unwavering focus on long-term goals. Whether in an Ironman race or the startup ecosystem, the desire to be the best requires pushing boundaries, making sacrifices, and maintaining a resilient mindset.
?? The Road Ahead: Reclaiming Balance and Purpose
As I work towards rebuilding my health and balancing it with my startup ambitions, I recognize the importance of consistency, community, and self-reflection. The lessons from my sports journey remind me that success isn't just about achieving the end goal and continuous growth and improvement.
In the startup world, like in the Olympics, only a few reach the pinnacle. But the journey, the small victories, and the relentless pursuit of excellence define us. As I reconnect with the principles that once guided me, I aim to bring the same dedication and purpose to my personal and professional life.
The inspiration often comes from within, fueled by past experiences and the communities we build around us. As I move forward, I'm committed to rekindling my passion for sports and applying the invaluable lessons I learned to my startup journey. After all, it's not just about winning the race but about fighting well and finding fulfillment in every step.
Love this! In our journey to success, it doesn't always come easy, what's important is the courage, patience, and perseverance to continue amidst life's challenges.
