Maps to better understand the world
We all need a better understanding of the world. Today we are lucky to have access to a lot of data. The main topics are, wealth inequality, human development, climate change. If you put all this data together it will be easier not only to understand but hopefully to act to improve human condition on planet Earth.
First of all Human Development Index. Source Wikipedia.
Is an indicator of education level, life expectancy, income per capita and is considered a better indicator in terms of development level than GDP per capita.
Second, list of countries by inequality adjusted HDI intended to represent a measure of inequality. Source Wikipedia.
Third, potential vulnerability to climate change. Article: source World Economic Forum. Map source, Standard & Poor's.
Fourth, list of countries by intentional homicide rate. Usually people overvaluate crime in their neighbourhood but the reason I put the article here is to allow you to make a connection between all the factors discussed before
Let's take Japan as an example, the murder rate is very low, 0.3.
395 momicide in one year and we are speaking about a country with 127 million of people. Also Iceland has a very low rate. They have a very high Human Development Index (20th) but what is probably more relevant with such a low homicide rate is the inequality adjusted HDI where we find that Japan is in 21st position.
Also Norway is a good example, they are first as HDI, first as inequallity adjusted HDI and with a homicide rate of 0.6. They are also between the least vulnerable to climate change.
As obvious as it sounds now there is a strong connection between all theese factors.
Of course is necessary to enforce law to stop violence and as well to find agreements between countries to stop climate change (now) but we also need to fight inequality as a main source of violence and poverty.
About violence as a cause of poverty see the great talk of Gary Haugen on TedTalk:
About wealth distribution and inequality see what Thomas Piketty has to say on his amazing TedTalk:
Inequality is not necessary, should countries redistribute most of the capital with taxes?
Is the economic system right and equal? How countries could fight billion euros companies and powerfull associations with interests in perpetuating and incrementing inequality? How can the system became more human? All these billions of cash are just funded on trust and trust is property of people. So we have, at least in theory, the power to change everything.
