Mapping Growth: A Tale of Business Revelation About PR and Comms

"What's the point of trying? It's clear I'm in the wrong business! Who needs PR? What exactly are we selling? Sometimes I don't even know what we're selling, other than maybe social media," Jane told her coach, who stared at her in silence.

Jane had been a freelancer in the PR market for years; she loved her job, but at some point, she realised she was performing her tasks in a routine manner. It was only when her company's sales were down that she lifted her gaze, wonder sparkling in her eyes.

The market was changing. But to what extent, and what was the nature of the change? It had all turned to social media. The once-potent tools of traditional PR appeared to have lost their lustre, and she found herself proficient in the very instruments that now seemed outdated.

"I am in the most pointless sector. Meaningless," she told her coach in a tone you couldn't tell was anger or desperation or both at once.

"Let's make a mind map," her coach suggested, drawing a circle on paper and writing the word 'Communication' in the centre.

"Let's go," he said, and they began the journey of connecting concepts and words.

It took them an hour of analysing and searching for the concepts that stem from the word 'Communication'. At one point, as her mind map had almost covered the entire paper, Jane found herself momentarily still. Her gaze locked onto the word she had just inscribed in the final connection of her mind map. Eyes widened with the sudden realisation of what she had expressed on paper, Jane raised her gaze and met the smiling eyes of her coach.

"Oxygen."

Communication for businesses is oxygen.

Without it, they cannot survive.

Jane had just opened the door to the growth of her business.

Why Communication and PR are Vital for Businesses

Public relations (PR) and corporate communication play a vital role in the success and sustainability of businesses, closely intertwined with the sales function. Here are several key reasons why:

Building and Maintaining Reputation:

  • PR helps in shaping and managing a company's reputation. A positive reputation fosters trust among consumers, investors, and other stakeholders.
  • A strong reputation can significantly influence customers' purchasing decisions, contributing directly to increased sales.

Creating Brand Awareness:

  • Effective PR and communication strategies help in creating and maintaining brand awareness.
  • Increased brand visibility often leads to higher recognition and consideration when consumers are making purchasing decisions.

Establishing Credibility and Trust:

  • Communication efforts, such as press releases, thought leadership articles, and media interactions, contribute to establishing the credibility of a business.
  • Trust is a critical factor in the decision-making process, and a trustworthy image can positively impact sales.

Managing Crises:

  • PR is essential for crisis management. How a company handles crises and communicates during challenging times can significantly impact its public image.
  • A well-handled crisis can protect the brand and maintain customer loyalty, preventing potential declines in sales.

Effective Marketing Communication:

  • PR and marketing communication go hand in hand. A coordinated approach ensures that promotional messages are consistent across different channels.
  • This synergy reinforces marketing efforts, making them more impactful and contributing to increased sales.

Engaging with the Target Audience:

  • Communication strategies help in identifying and engaging with the target audience.
  • Tailored messages and communication channels that resonate with the audience can lead to increased customer engagement and, consequently, higher sales.

Differentiation in a Competitive Market:

  • In a saturated market, effective communication helps businesses stand out.
  • PR efforts that highlight unique selling propositions, corporate social responsibility initiatives, or innovative products can give a competitive edge and positively influence sales.

Supporting Business Goals:

PR and corporate communication align with broader business goals. Whether it's entering new markets, launching new products, or expanding the customer base, communication strategies play a pivotal role.
