"What's the point of trying? It's clear I'm in the wrong business! Who needs PR? What exactly are we selling? Sometimes I don't even know what we're selling, other than maybe social media," Jane told her coach, who stared at her in silence.
Jane had been a freelancer in the PR market for years; she loved her job, but at some point, she realised she was performing her tasks in a routine manner. It was only when her company's sales were down that she lifted her gaze, wonder sparkling in her eyes.
The market was changing. But to what extent, and what was the nature of the change? It had all turned to social media. The once-potent tools of traditional PR appeared to have lost their lustre, and she found herself proficient in the very instruments that now seemed outdated.
"I am in the most pointless sector. Meaningless," she told her coach in a tone you couldn't tell was anger or desperation or both at once.
"Let's make a mind map," her coach suggested, drawing a circle on paper and writing the word 'Communication' in the centre.
"Let's go," he said, and they began the journey of connecting concepts and words.
It took them an hour of analysing and searching for the concepts that stem from the word 'Communication'. At one point, as her mind map had almost covered the entire paper, Jane found herself momentarily still. Her gaze locked onto the word she had just inscribed in the final connection of her mind map. Eyes widened with the sudden realisation of what she had expressed on paper, Jane raised her gaze and met the smiling eyes of her coach.
"Oxygen."
Communication for businesses is oxygen.
Without it, they cannot survive.
Jane had just opened the door to the growth of her business.
