Mapping EU Peace Training: Requesting Input on Training Centres, Curricula & Experts

Important Request: Major EU Mapping of Curricula, Experts & Centers – Peacebuilding and Prevention Trainings

Dear Colleagues / Friends,

PATRIR is involved in a major EU consortium (PeaceTraining.EU) carrying out a comprehensive review of training & capacity building for peacebuilding, prevention and crisis management missions - focusing on training programmes, academies and curricula of Institutions in Europe.

The project will include interviews and consultations with thousands of practitioners, policy makers, trainers and experts across Europe and internationally; focus groups; and development of curricula and mission-specific training materials for EU/EC institutions, EU member states, national military and police forces involved in peace support and peacekeeping operations, and civil society organisations and actors.

We are writing to you to ask for your input and support on 3 points. We would tremendously appreciate your support in this and will: 1. cite it in the appreciations; as well as 2. ensure all findings and results are shared with you.

We would also be glad to discuss with you directly if you are interested in the project and would like to receive more information.

3 Questions: Mapping Training Institutions, Curricula, Experts and Centres in Europe

Our specific request is to ask if you have recommendations for the following 3 categories, and, if you do, if you can send these to us:

  1. Names of Training Institutions, Academies and Centres in Europe providing crisis management, peacebuilding and prevention training and training related to these fields;
  2. Copies / examples of curricula (as well as handbooks, manuals, modules) used in training / capacity building for personnel deployed for crisis management / prevention; peacebuilding; and prevention of armed conflict missions / engagements
  3. Recommendations of key individuals / experts in Europe and/or internationally involved in training in peacebuilding, prevention and crisis management that you suggest we should contact for interviews

Any input / feed-back on these would be deeply appreciated. This will feed directly into our mapping and baseline review of existing curricula now being implemented with partners across Europe. Please send responses directly to [email protected]

With appreciation and thanks,

Kai Brand-Jacobsen

The OSCE Conflict Prevention Centre definitely. You might also want to have a look at the IAEA Incident and Emergency Centre's training programmes, even though the latter is designed for nuclear emergencies. Yet I believe one can benefit from their lessons learned in terms of liaison and emergency response as well as the preparation therefore.

The Branch of Peace Foundation is very active in the U.S. & Canada, if you are interested in collaborations and perspectives from across the pond. May peace be with you always.

Kai, why don′t you also ask the NP Alliance for inputs (the groups of "members" still electing a part of the board of NP). There are both the oldies and new organisations on hte block. You can reach them via [email protected] !

I would recommend to include civil society/private companies which have been involved in crisis support, training of peacekeeping forces for health prevention risks, medical contractors to the UN and NGOs. Some have very significant experience in crisis support resolution. rgds, michael
