The Map is Not the Territory

The Map is Not the Territory

We’re so used to using symbols to represent our understanding of the world that we sometimes forget that the images and terms are not the same as the objects and sensations they describe. A map, an emoji, a photo, a painting, a name, a label, an adjective – these are convenient symbols or shortcuts that help us to interpret and record the events and sensations we experience. We understand that our view of the world is informed by these symbols. But they are not the same as the objects they refer to. Yet, we are all conditioned to merge the object with its description. Have you noticed that?

This process is so deeply ingrained that we rarely consider the difference between the description and the object itself. Do you find that strange? That we can live within a framework of references that are only representations of reality rather than experiencing the real world directly without the symbols that describe it? It’s a very popular topic for discussion amongst philosophers and a recurring theme amongst the masters of meditation who seek to help us perceive the wonder of the world directly. Whilst seeking the perfect jewel of enlightenment, we can find ways to apply this insight in practical ways that will directly benefit our lives and the lives of those we encounter.

Mindfulness invites us to consider our thoughts and feelings with a degree of detachment and objectivity. When we see someone and discover that we’re generating a stream of thoughts, images and feelings, it’s deeply refreshing to realise that our reactions are not entirely connected to the person before us. They’re an extension of whatever’s in our hearts. Or we’re reproducing the emotional responses that we were taught to feel when we were very young and highly impressionable. In ancient times, mystics taught that we do not really know who we are and that the true purpose of this life is solve this conundrum since the realisation of our true self would open our consciousness to complete understanding. If we don’t really know who we are, it is almost impossible to know who anyone else is. We function on a series of inter-connected and often contradictory assumptions, none of which are complete or truly valid. Self-knowledge resolves these contradictions and lends a profound insight into the nature of ourselves and the world around us, a perception which no longer imposes barriers between ourselves and the rest of reality.

?If we can free ourselves from the habit of applying our descriptions and imperfect judgements to everyone we meet, we might discover a closer sense of connection that favours understanding, kindness, compassion and a natural instinct to help wherever we can. Does that sound like a formula for a better world? You’ll feel calmer, stronger, more balanced and less inclined to judge others from the imperfections of your own heart. It might be an important step on the long road to enlightenment but it’s a beautiful way to live a happier, healthier and more fulfilling life right now.
