Map it out!
When you're asked for the phone number of a friend, it's likely you don't have it memorized, so you check your phone contacts. Likewise, step-by-step GPS is relied on almost exclusively to get from point A to point B. But have you ever been led to the middle of nowhere? Or to an area still under construction? (If you're in the Dallas area, perpetual construction is the norm and everyone knows not to rely on GPS!)
So we still need maps and remain fascinated with them for more than simple directions. In 2013, David M. Quinn wrote a list of reasons why we love maps.
-
Maps teach us about ourselves.
America is often compared to other countries, but when you map it out and consider the size comparison, it's incredible anyone says, "This is how they do it in America!" Our mainland coast-to-coast is incredibly diverse. Some areas you can leave your car running while you duck into the store for a snack. Other areas, same scenario, your car would be gone in sixty seconds. We learn about ourselves by comparing one market area to another.
-
We love knowledge and information.
When it comes to promoting your product, do you consider what works best in each region? If a new product is launched in Los Angeles, will the campaign be as successful in Nashville? Mapping helps us take a look at what we are doing all over the country. Keeping an eye on what's working on one area might spark an idea for another area. Will the excitement generated in San Antonio be the same as what's working in Seattle? Maps give knowledge and information a place to be displayed for analysis.
-
We need relationships.
How do you know what will work? Travel to different areas is not the same as living in different communities coast to coast. Be sure to keep your finger on the pulse of each area by connecting with locals, who can provide you with feedback on what will work and what won't fly at all in their communities. Relationships between communities and regions may be critical in the success of your next promotion. Maps show how one area is relevant to another.
Maps assist in planning promotions, tracking success, and displaying similarities and differences between regions. Don't forget - maps also provide your target market with accurate info so they can locate your products, events, and special promotions. Maps appeal to your clients and potential clients, showing them where you have been, and how you can extend their reach. Don't lose customers by relying on GPS to lead your customers and clients to you.
Maps are so multi-functional for business to client, and business to business, as well as internal business assessment. Information makes an impact when it's visual. Map it out!
