Many Nudges for AI Adoption

As we have been exploring Canadian small business and AI, we might have been doing so in a vacuum. After all, many small businesses aren’t watching my LinkedIn feed. Small business leaders are busy building their businesses and often don’t have the time to explore new technologies or techniques. So how de we get people engaged in embracing AI for their business?? We can do better than word of mouth if we think about the many interactions that small business leaders have throughout the year. What if we considered those moments, those points of inflection, when small businesses leaders interact with influencers outside their business?

  • Visiting the bank’s website? Perhaps a quick primer on how AI can help with invoicing, fraud prevention or even follow-up reminders for lagging payments. Automatically deposit cheques by taking a photo.
  • Picking up a shipment?? How about a quick offer on automated record keeping of those business expenses separated from personal shipments.? Know exactly when the shipment will arrive to plan your work.
  • Grabbing some supplies? Can those supplies be put on a subscription plan to get them just in time so that the business gets only what they need? This could be the avocado story from Power and prediction: Avi Goldfarb on the disruptive economics of artificial intelligence — Schwartz Reisman Institute (utoronto.ca).
  • Buying a new mobile device? Learn how AI makes that device easier to use.? See how text can be recognized in photos and transcribed into notes.? Search up parts by taking a photo of the old part.?
  • Applying for a permit with the government? See how AI can speed the permit process like it did in the city of Kelowna (City of Kelowna develops AI tool to speed up building permit applications | CBC News).? Experience fist-hand how large language model enhanced search speeds time to knowledge so that the business leaders get the right response after the first prompt.

“Moments that matter” is a customer experience ambition I learned from the banking community.? The ambition is that the bank’s employees create compelling events for customers to retain them or to grow their relationship with their customers.? The banks are leveraging AI to make every moment with their customers matter by having a deeper appreciation for their customer’s needs.? Can we make every moment matter for small business leaders so that their interactions outside their head’s down work routine help reinforce the opportunities of AI for their business?

Love the examples, especially Kelowna – I witnessed it firsthand, and it was truly a game changer. One thing I'm curious about: As AI becomes more mainstream and startups create more wrappers around GPT and other models, how will people without technical knowledge navigate through the noise? After all, not all AI is created equal.
