Many BitePRO? clients care for, teach or support people with autism.

It is really important to me that I understand the disorder and how I can best support our clients.
- Autism is a neurological spectrum disorder that affects 1 out of every 54 children in the United States. This is according to the 2020 CDC data. It also states that about 1 in 6 (17%) children aged 3–17 years were diagnosed with a developmental disability, as reported by parents. These included autism, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, blindness, and cerebral palsy, among others.
- An estimated 40 percent of people with autism are nonverbal. This statistic comes from Autism Speaks which is the largest autism advocacy organisation in the United States. It sponsors autism research and conducts awareness and outreach activities aimed at families, governments, and the public
- Being autistic does not mean you have an illness or disease. It means your brain works in a different way from other people. This is how the NHS in the UK describes the disorder. It also states that autism is different for everyone. Some autistic people need little or no support. Others may need help from a parent or carer every day.
- Boys are four times more likely to be diagnosed with autism than girls. This skewed sex ratio has been recognized since the first cases of autism were described in the 1940s. The exact reasons for the ratio remain unclear. It could be rooted in biological differences between the sexes. Or, some experts say, it may be an artefact of the way autism is defined and diagnosed.
- Self-injurious behaviours (SIB) have been reported in more than 30 % of children with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in clinic-based studies. I could not find any figures for challenging behaviours that injury those around them. For some individuals is a short lived behaviour, for others it is a long term behaviour. BitePRO? clothing is specifically designed to protect people from this type of challenging behaviour.
Our clothing range includes 7 different types of arm guards, leg guards, upper body garments and gloves. Our standard garments are designed to stop a bite breaking the skin, then we have an added protection range which reduces severe bruising and blunt force trauma.
