Manufacturing Success

Manufacturing Success

Little headline coverage is given in the media to UK manufacturing success stories, and the task of redressing the balance has been taken up by organisations such as Make UK and the Jefferson Group. But successes are continually taking place.

For example, on 8th May, @Jefferson_MFG tweeted:

“It’s been a phenomenal few months for Bentley Motors. Since the start of the year, the carmaker has?announced plans to create 200 jobs, reported the highest sales in its history and started building a new £35m Launch Quality Centre & Engineering Technical Centre in Crewe. #UKmfg”

In a post this month to launch its Industrial Strategy Report, Make UK reminds us of the major contribution that manufacturing makes to the nation’s economy.

“The UK manufacturing sector is an essential contributor to the country’s economy generating £206bn gross valued added in 2022 a fifth higher than a decade ago. It accounts for around half our exports, two thirds of spending on research and development and accounts for a significant level of business investment.?

“The sector employs around 2.6m highly skilled people across the UK, many of them in areas that need levelling up. In short manufacturing matters to the prosperity and security of the UK.”

Strategic pathways to the future

Innovate UK has published a remarkable study predicting developments in UK Manufacturing and Materials up to the year 2050. The report bases its vision on what it describes as three strategic imperatives. These are based on the objectives that products should be:

  • net zero and resource efficient by understanding our environmental resources and the impact of every stage in the supply chain and manufacturing process and widely adopting sustainable practices?
  • resilient and responsive with the agility to mitigate risks arising from the changing global economy, interruptions to supply of critical minerals and materials, national and global disruptions, and climate change?
  • technologically advanced to improve efficiency across supply chains, enable novel business models, support whole-system design and deliver highly customised products

Manufacturing materials

Innovate UK also predicts that new materials for manufacturing will be discovered:

“Materials informatics, including machine learning tools and techniques, and physics-based modelling has improved the discovery and development of new materials.?

“New chemicals and materials innovation will be accelerated through the increased adoption of digital technologies in research organisations. Advanced metallurgy, 3D weaving, 2D crystals, nano materials, metamaterials and in-orbit manufacturing are business as usual.?

“Low-cost sensing technologies and high-tech quantum sensors are fundamental technologies in advanced manufacturing. Smart materials continue to be developed with in-built sensors and the ability to diagnose and repair themselves.”

Precision advances

This is an exciting time to be involved in precision engineering and electronics. ANR Manufacturing has undertaken a range of projects with a direct connection to Net Zero objectives, such as the production of components for wind turbines.

Advances in precision engineering

In the Thames Valley where we are based, ANR is surrounded by enterprises with expertise in sectors ranging from information technology to pharmaceuticals and from film & TV to rocket science. The region also has a highly skilled pool of talent to draw on to offer their capabilities in research, development, testing, production and other areas.

Make UK opens its Manufacturing the Facts 2022 report with these words:

“Make UK's annual analysis of the sector shines a light on the latest manufacturing facts and statistics.

“With an annual output of £183 billion, the UK remains the ninth largest manufacturing nation in the world. Our analysis debunks multiple myths, including the misconception that manufacturing jobs are poorly paid, with the average manufacturing wage being 12% higher than the whole economy.”

Engineering and manufacturing have the abilities to create major benefits for the future. For young people wishing to help make changes for the better, there could be exciting career paths to the future on offer.
