Manufacturing Innovation at the European Manufacturing Hub in Bologna, Italy
Paolino Montanino
Executive @ Avanade | Managing Director | General Manager | Strategic Management, Business Applications, Driving Business Performance, Dynamics 365
You know the saying, “If it isn’t broken, why fix it?” At the Avanade Bologna Manufacturing Innovation Hub, we don’t believe in that idea. We wake up every day not thinking about how to fix things that are broken, but how to make things that are working do even more. We take Microsoft products that work and make them work for manufacturers across Europe.
Our Bologna team is set up to identify challenges for the manufacturing industry and come up with new and innovative ways to solve them. This is not the everyday work of systems integration—we are creating new solutions to common issues through teamwork, collaboration and the collective knowledge held by our team of technology and industry experts.
Our latest innovation is focused on Intelligent Asset Management. We understand the challenges of asset management:
- 40% of global manufacturers DO NOT use analytics data recorded from connected devices to analyse processes and identify optimization possibilities.
- More than 60% of capacity losses (after schedule losses) are due to equipment not being available to produce up to capacity.
- It costs 1.8 times more to repair a failed asset than if the problem had been addressed prior to the failure.
This is more than just addressing problems before they arise; understanding what assets are capable of and when and how to maintain them can help manufacturers achieve operational resilience. The team at the Bologna Hub used their manufacturing knowledge and Microsoft expertise to build a solution that enables enterprise asset management. Using D365, Data and AI, IoT etc., we have mapped a transformation course from scheduled maintenance through predictive maintenance and arriving at intelligent operations.
Enterprise Asset Management gives manufacturers the ability to efficiently manage and carry out all tasks related to managing and servicing all types of physical assets. Benefits of this approach include: reduced maintenance costs, extended asset life, improved availability and performance and the ability to find the right balance between corrective and preventive maintenance.
