Manufacturing Innovation Chronicle

Welcome to my monthly newsletter! Discover the manufacturer's journey into AI integration, from overcoming challenges in data quality and talent to increasing investments in engineering and factory operations. Learn about NVIDIA’s new tools designed to simplify AI development and how SoftServe uses these innovations to increase efficiency in industrial settings. We’ll also take a look at SoftServe’s GenAI Industrial Assistant, which analyzes vast data, providing workers with quick access to equipment manuals and real-time guidance.

MIT Technology Review Insights studied how manufacturers are using AI in engineering, design, and factory operations. They surveyed 300 manufacturers, with 64% still experimenting with AI and 35% already in production. Many executives plan to increase AI spending significantly over the next two years. However, challenges remain in scaling AI, mainly due to issues with talent, skills, and data:

  1. Manufacturers have trouble with a lack of skilled workers and poor data quality. These problems worsen as AI projects move closer to production. Limited cloud computing access also hampers progress.
  2. In engineering and design, 58% of executives expect to boost AI spending by over 10% in the next two years. Similarly, 43% plan to increase spending on factory operations. Larger manufacturers are more likely to invest heavily compared to smaller ones.
  3. Common AI uses include product design, conversational AI, and content creation. At the pilot stage, manufacturers focus on knowledge management and quality control. Desired outcomes include faster operations, less failures, better safety, and reduced carbon footprint.
  4. Poor data quality (57%), weak integration (54%), and governance (47%) hinder AI development. Only 20% of manufacturers have data ready for AI models, and this becomes more challenging as projects advance. Larger manufacturers face bigger data issues.

NVIDIA has launched NIM Agent Blueprints, customizable AI workflows that make it easier for enterprises to create generative AI applications, like customer service avatars, drug discovery tools, and data extraction systems. These blueprints come with sample apps, reference code, and tools to help businesses quickly build and adapt AI solutions using their own data.

SoftServe is helping companies adopt these blueprints by integrating them into its generative AI services. This allows clients to speed up their AI projects, improve efficiency, and drive innovation using AI-powered solutions tailored to their needs.

Manufacturing equipment is becoming more complex, which can slow down troubleshooting, maintenance, and overall operations. SoftServe’s Gen AI Industrial Assistant helps solve these problems by giving workers real-time access to equipment data and predictions for key performance indicators like overall equipment effectiveness. Powered by NVIDIA's Gen AI technology, it helps workers monitor equipment health, predict issues, and improve performance.

Using NVIDIA NeMo, the assistant can pull from both historical and real-time data, providing quick access to manuals and documentation. With NVIDIA Riva’s voice interface, workers can interact with the system in any language, making it easier to use.

The assistant also features a custom dashboard that offers quick access to digitized manuals and real-time data, helping workers make faster, better decisions. With its advanced processing, new AI features can be developed and deployed quickly, improving efficiency across industrial environments.
