Manufacturing engineer without degree?
Since I was a kid, I was taught that what I had to do when I grew up was?go to college and get a degree?to be?successful. This is what you normally do, you?find out what you want to do in college?and you get?a degree. Which for me it was Electrical Engineering and the area in which I have worked?in?the?majority?of?my career has been in Manufacturing.??
Over the years, I have worked with guys?who?have been in?the?“Engineering”?field?for more than 25 years?and?they have always told me that there are some people that can do the job and some?who just?cannot.??Still,?there are some?who?actually can do it but?don’t have a?degree?at all. Regardless of this,?they are some of the best engineers that I’ve ever worked with.?“Why is that?”?is?something that I always wondered?and still?I don’t know the answer.???
What I do know is this, I have been told by other engineers that they prefer not?to work with someone that doesn’t have a degree.?In this case,?I always prefer to say?“I don’t care if you have a degree?but?you can solve the problem and work with me”.?Some don’t have that belief but I’ve seen guys who don’t have?a?degree?perform better than someone that does.?This?isn’t the case all the time but sometimes, people just have it and didn’t need that degree to get themselves into the engineering world.???
In all honestly, as long as you can solve the problem and get things moving, you’re an “Ace” in my book. I think that is what some people don’t see, it doesn’t matter what your degree is, if you can accomplish the task at hand, be professional, your exactly what I’m looking for.???
