Manufacturing Day: October 6th

"Leadership is your ability to hide your panic from others.”?-?Laozi

Good Sunday morning all and welcome to this edition (No. 46) of "With That Said" (WTS), a LinkedIn newsletter powered by your friends here?at Supply Chain Now . Today, we want to celebrate the manufacturing industry and give you a heads-up (and some lead time) so you'll be prepared for Manufacturing Day 2023, which falls on Friday, October 6th this year.

Let's begin today by sharing a few factoids related to the world of manufacturing:

  • The word "manufacture" comes from two Latin words, "manu" (by hand) and "factus" (to make), which come together to mean "made by hand".
  • The world's first recognized factory was Cromford Mill in Derbyshire, England, established in 1771 by Richard Arkwright for spinning cotton.
  • The Industrial Revolution, which began in the late 18th Century, marked a major turning point in manufacturing with the introduction of mechanized production methods and the establishment of factories.
  • The first industrial robot, Unimate, started working on a General Motors assembly line in 1961.
  • Industry 4.0 refers to the fourth industrial revolution, characterized by smart factories where machines are augmented with web connectivity and connected to a system that can visualize the entire production chain and make autonomous decisions.
  • The global manufacturing industry "top 10", in terms of total output, is ranked accordingly: China, United States, Japan, Germany, India, South Korea, Russia, Italy, Mexico, and France. Check out this neat YouTube video from our friends at Statista that shows how the industry has evolved since 1990: click here.

Since 2012, Manufacturing Day is held on the first Friday of every October. According to one of the business leaders responsible for its creation, Dileep Thatte says "the purpose of Manufacturing Day is to show the reality of modern manufacturing careers by encouraging thousands of companies and educational institutions around the nation to open their doors to students, parents, teachers and community leaders. Each year thousands of manufacturers open their doors to give a glimpse at what today’s manufacturing really looks like and inspire the next generation of skilled workers."

Allison Giddens , one of our special co-hosts here at SCN and President at Win-Tech, Inc. , is a big supporter of Manufacturing Day each and every year. Win-Tech is a veteran-owned, woman-owned small business manufacturer specializing in aerospace precision machined parts. Allison & her team open their plant doors to students and young people throughout the year to help tackle the awareness gap that exists with manufacturing (and broader industry). Check out Allison's perspective & point-of-view that she shared on Manufacturing Day 2022: click here. You can also learn more about how to get involved & participate here.

Our SCN team encourages our global family & community, no matter where you live, lead & work, to celebrate the impact that the manufacturing industry has had on the world - - and most importantly: share that message with our children, so they are aware of some of the exciting career opportunities out there, awaiting their immense talents.

Speaking of special days near & dear to our hearts, National Supply Chain Day, founded by Mary Kate Love (an uber-talented member of the SCN team!) is recognized on April 29th each year. Get ready for the biggest celebration yet in 2024.
