One of the notable aspects of this film is that it was financed by over 500,000 farmers who contributed Rs. 2 each to fund the project.

"Manthan" won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi in 1977. Smita Patil, who played a significant role in the film, also received the Filmfare Award for Best Actress for her performance.
