Manipulating Time
Joe Carbone
While everyone is automating, we're busy putting the “human” back into "human capital".
Throughout my career, I've developed several key strategies that have not only differentiated me from my peers but have also consistently helped me achieve my annual goals. One pivotal strategy I recommend is what I call "manipulating time." Though it might sound like a concept straight out of science fiction, let me explain how it works in a practical sense.
Expanding Time:
Today, many people prioritize work-life balance when choosing a career, particularly the younger generation. However, for those aiming for rapid career progression, increased earnings through commissions, or learning new skills, consider the impact of adjusting your workweek. Normally, a 40-hour workweek totals 2,080 hours annually. By extending this to 55 hours, you accumulate 2,860 hours a year. While this increase might seem modest, it actually gives you an extra 32.5 days per year, effectively adding a '13th month' to your calendar. Imagine the possibilities if you add an extra month to every year of your career!
Compressing Time:
On the other side of the spectrum, compressing time involves maximizing efficiency, particularly in networking. My team and I have sponsored numerous networking events over the years, which has not only been beneficial but has also allowed us to compress time significantly. Imagine orchestrating between 20 and 30 meetings within just a few days, compared to the much fewer, spread-out meetings you might currently manage. The key to success here is meticulous preparation: each meeting should be pre-qualified with potential clients or key referral sources. By the time of the event, many of the attendees are not strangers but connections that either introduce us to their networks or catch us up on their professional lives and ventures.

Mastering the Art:
Navigating the rhythm of both expanding and compressing time can give you a unique competitive edge. It’s an art worth mastering, as it enables not only faster career growth and broader networks but also a more profound understanding of time management. To excel, start by evaluating your current commitments and see where you can apply these strategies. With practice, you'll refine your ability to manipulate time to your advantage, all while maintaining a balance that supports your personal and professional life.
Embrace the Challenge:
While the idea of manipulating time by expanding and compressing your schedule can seem daunting, the rewards are substantial. Begin by integrating these strategies gradually, and observe how they transform your efficiency and productivity. Remember, the ultimate goal is to make the most of your time without sacrificing the quality of your life and work. As you become more adept at these techniques, you'll find that what once seemed like a demanding effort becomes second nature—a true testament to your growth and adaptability in any professional environment.
Take the challenge, and you may find that mastering the art of time manipulation not only accelerates your career but also enriches your personal experiences. After all, time is the one resource we all wish we had more of—learning to maximize it is perhaps the most valuable skill of all.
