A manifesto from Lexonik

A manifesto from Lexonik

It’s the final sprint toward the General Election climax next Thursday.

So, with one week to go, we thought we’d share our mini manifesto with you.

What’s at its core?

We’re glad you asked.

Our key manifesto mantra is: ‘Nobody Should Be Limited Because They Can’t Read’.

Whichever party should come to power, we believe it’s vital that literacy is placed central to a new government strategy.

This means a brave acknowledgment of just how sub-optimal reading rates remain in the UK, and a real commitment to changing the way schools are funded, teachers are supported and interventions championed.

Tell us below what you make of our manifesto points:

  • A focus on students leaving school at 16 with a minimum reading age of 14 wherever it is plausible to make this goal attainable
  • Arming new teachers with the skills they need to teach reading and vocabulary within the secondary curriculum. Embed this vital work in Initial Teacher Training
  • Review resit provision. Work with FE colleges to give them the resource needed in addressing gaps across reading foundation knowledge and literacy
  • Place emphasis on alternative provision and pupil referral units, ensuring it’s no longer inevitable that youngsters in these settings enter the world of work with poor literacy
  • Be long-term focused on reform, not own ‘one term only’ tactics
  • Introduce tangible progress markers to help schools navigate beyond literacy deprivation

In the coming days you can read more about these strands of our manifesto desire on the Lexonik website and social pages.

We also welcome hearing yours, and don’t forget if you want to talk with us directly about our interventions, please reach out to us by emailing [email protected]??
