In a world of What Ifs, Could a Manefesto for Collective Agents of Change in Learning be a guinding light?
Let's explore...
What if our religion was each other? If our practice was our life? If prayer was our words? What if the temple was the Earth? If forests were our church? If holy water – the rivers, lakes and oceans? What if meditation was our relationships? If the teacher was life? If wisdom was self-knowledge? If love was the center of our being? - Ganga White
1. Environmental Stewardship: What if we but Nature on the Board? What if in all our decision making we considered the impact our decisions would have on all living things? What if Biodiversity, Conservation and Indigenous Wisdom were taught in all communities and all cultures from early childhood and throughout life?
2. Equitable Access: What if we advocate for equitable access to quality education for all individuals, irrespective of their socioeconomic status, geographic location, or background? What if we believe that education is a fundamental human right and should be accessible to everyone without discrimination?
3. Empowerment Through Diversity: What if we celebrate diversity and recognise the richness it brings to the learning experience? What if we promote inclusive environments that respect and value the unique perspectives, cultures, and identities of all learners? What if by embracing diversity, we empower individuals to reach their full potential and contribute meaningfully to society?
4. Lifelong Learning: What if we endorse the concept of lifelong learning as essential for personal growth, professional development, and societal progress? What if we encourage continuous learning beyond formal education settings and support initiatives that provide opportunities for individuals to acquire new skills, knowledge, and competencies throughout their lives?
5. Critical Thinking and Creativity: What if we emphasise the cultivation of critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills as indispensable tools for navigating an increasingly complex and dynamic world? What if we advocate for educational approaches that foster curiosity, independent thinking, and innovation, enabling individuals to adapt to change and make informed decisions?
6. Collaborative Action: What if we believe in the power of collaboration and collective action to drive positive change in education? What if we encourage partnerships among stakeholders, including educators, learners, policymakers, and communities, to co-create innovative solutions, share best practices, and address systemic challenges? What if together, we can build a more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable learning ecosystem that empowers individuals and transforms societies?
How does this Manifesto Align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals?
Our world is full of What Ifs that we actually have the power to turn into action. Before we look into how let's consider how these points that make up a Manifesto can be linked to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
1. Environmental Stewardship: The Earth Charter guides us to respect and care for the community of life, in doing so we embrace the aims of SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG14 (Life Below Water) and SDG 15 (Life on Land) which lays the foundations for futures that ensure sustainability for all.
2. Equitable Access: This point aligns with SDG 4 - Quality Education, particularly target 4.1 which aims to ensure that all girls and boys complete free, equitable, and quality primary and secondary education.
3. Empowerment Through Diversity: Embracing diversity contributes to SDG 10 - Reduced Inequalities by promoting social inclusion and ensuring that no one is left behind, as well as supporting SDG 16 - Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions by fostering inclusive societies.
4. Lifelong Learning: Lifelong learning is central to SDG 4 - Quality Education, especially target 4.3 which focuses on ensuring equal access for all women and men to affordable and quality technical, vocational, and tertiary education.
5. Critical Thinking and Creativity: Developing critical thinking and creativity supports various SDGs, including SDG 9 - Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure (by fostering innovation) and SDG 11 - Sustainable Cities and Communities (by encouraging problem-solving for sustainable urban development).
6. Collaborative Action: Collaborative action aligns with SDG 17 - Partnerships for the Goals, which emphasizes the importance of multi-stakeholder partnerships to achieve the SDGs. It also supports other SDGs indirectly by facilitating cooperation and collective efforts towards common goals.
By aligning each point with the SDGs, the manifesto demonstrates how individual actions in education contribute to broader global efforts for sustainable development.
What About Developing Our Inner Selves?
The Sustainable Development Goals has been around for sometime now as a guiding compass for all of us in our journey to sustainability and futures we can only imagine. However, for any of this to be effective and take hold and make a positive impact we need to look inward. A non-profit leading the way is the Inner Development Goals (IDG). They have begun to co-create a framework that is helping us navigate the complexities of the inner so that we are better equiped to tackle the outer. A framework of Being, Thinking, Relating, Collaborating and Acting. Here's how:
1. Being: Relationship with Self
Embrace self-awareness and self-acceptance as the foundation of personal growth. Cultivate practices such as mindfulness, meditation, and reflection to deepen your understanding of yourself and nurture a harmonious relationship with your inner being. Remember, self-love is the key to unlocking your full potential and living authentically.

2. Thinking: Cognitive Skills
Stimulate your intellect and enhance your cognitive skills through continuous learning and intellectual exploration. Engage in activities that challenge your mind, such as problem-solving puzzles, reading diverse literature, and engaging in stimulating discussions. Cultivate curiosity, critical thinking, and creativity to expand your cognitive horizons and adapt to ever-changing circumstances.
3. Relating: Caring for Others and the World
Foster compassion, empathy, and kindness towards others and the world around you. Recognise the interconnectedness of all beings and the importance of nurturing supportive and caring relationships. Practice active listening, empathy, and altruism in your interactions, and strive to make a positive difference in the lives of others and the well-being of our planet.
4. Collaborating: Social Skills
Cultivate effective communication, teamwork, and conflict resolution skills to collaborate harmoniously with others towards shared goals. Embrace diversity and inclusivity in your social interactions, respecting and valuing the perspectives and contributions of others. Seek opportunities to collaborate across boundaries and leverage collective wisdom and resources for greater impact.
5. Acting: Enabling Change
Take courageous action to create positive change in yourself, your community, and the world. Set meaningful goals aligned with your values and aspirations, and take consistent steps towards their realization. Be proactive in addressing challenges and seizing opportunities for growth and transformation. Remember, every action, no matter how small, has the power to catalyze change and contribute to a better future for all.
The importance of inner development in fostering personal well-being, meaningful relationships, and positive societal change has never been more essential. By prioritising being, thinking, relating, collaborating, and acting, individuals can cultivate the inner qualities and skills needed to thrive personally and contribute to a more compassionate, inclusive, and sustainable world. Okay, so how?
What about Action? What Can We REALLY Do?
The overwhelm of the issues we face can often leave us feeling helpless and hopeless. Fret not. With collective action significant and meaningful change and impact is possible. Here are my top practical calls to action for each point in the Manifesto linked to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
1. Environmental Stewardship: Promote environmental education, sustainable practices, and eco-friendly initiatives within educational institutions and communities. Advocate for incorporating environmental awareness into curriculum, implementing waste reduction and recycling programmes, and supporting eco-friendly infrastructure projects. By fostering environmental stewardship, we contribute to SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 13 (Climate Action) which includes the respect and care of the community of life uncluding SDG14 (Life Below Water) and SDG 15 (Life on Land), ensuring a sustainable future for all.
2. Equitable Access: Advocate for policies and initiatives that promote equal access to education, such as scholarships for underprivileged students, investment in infrastructure for remote areas, and outreach programmes for marginalised communities. Support organisations working towards achieving SDG 4 by volunteering, donating, or raising awareness about the importance of equitable education.
2. Empowerment Through Diversity: Foster inclusive learning environments by implementing diversity and inclusion training for educators, incorporating diverse perspectives into curriculum and teaching materials, and promoting cultural exchange programmes. Engage in community-building activities that celebrate diversity and raise awareness about the value of inclusivity in achieving SDG 10 and SDG 16.
3. Lifelong Learning: Encourage lifelong learning opportunities by promoting adult education programmes, offering flexible learning options such as online courses and vocational training, and supporting initiatives that recognise prior learning experiences. Advocate for policies that promote lifelong learning and skills development to contribute to the achievement of SDG 4, particularly target 4.3.
4. Critical Thinking and Creativity: Integrate critical thinking and creativity into educational practices through project-based learning, interdisciplinary approaches, and problem-solving activities. Support initiatives that promote STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education and extracurricular activities that stimulate creativity and innovation. Encourage participation in hackathons, maker fairs, and other events that foster creative thinking and problem-solving skills, contributing to SDG 9 and SDG 11.
5. Collaborative Action: Build partnerships and networks with stakeholders across sectors to address education challenges collectively. Participate in collaborative projects and initiatives that promote knowledge sharing, resource pooling, and joint action towards common goals. Advocate for policy coherence and investment in cross-sectoral partnerships to support the achievement of all SDGs, particularly SDG 17.
By taking practical actions aligned with each point in the Manifesto and linked to the SDGs, individuals and organisations can contribute effectively to advancing global efforts for sustainable development through education.
