Manifesting change – No magic required.
Warning: The following steps will only work when you do.
Stage One: Develop your focus of power
Get yourself in a relaxed, calm state, (go for a walk first?), then sit somewhere peaceful, sit with a notebook and pen.
Decide what’s truly important - to YOU. Keep this simple and keep it powerful. Begin with 3-5 broad topics/areas such as:
- My health and sense of wellbeing
- My relationship with my immediate family
- My enjoyment and sense of purpose in my work
- Next, write for a few minutes on each of those topics. Before you begin to write, consider these questions:
- What’s important to me about this?
- What do I want more of/less of in this area of my life?
- What do I want to be different this year? i.e. what results and outcomes do I want to create?
5. Hatch a powerful plan
For each of the areas, write down what actions you need to take to move forward towards the outcome/results you want to make happen. Be careful to avoid secondary or irrelevant actions which do not make real progress on your goal. For example, when you want to find a better job, researching and web surfing might be nice, but making telephone calls and sending your CV is better. Or more simply, buying new yoga pants doesn’t make you a yogi.
Stage Two: Develop sustained and regular action
Each day, do something which makes progress on at least two of your goals. At the end of each day, reflect on the following questions, writing quick notes on each (even if that’s just Y/N, etc.).
- Did I stay focused on what is important to me today?
- Am I making progress towards my goals?
- Did I hold back or stop myself at all?
3.1 ( If 'Yes') Why/how do I do that?
Stage Three: Notice your progress, celebrate your successes
This one is super-important and relates to developing your awareness, conscious discipline and self-esteem. Here, you need to find healthy ways to acknowledge and reward yourself for your progress. So decide ahead of time how you can treat yourself. Warning - for some of us this one is really challenging! If it helps, brainstorm stuff and pick from a random list, e.g. listen to a favourite audio book, have a long hot soak in the bathtub, treat yourself to an affordable luxury etc.
General support principles:
- Get someone to support/coach you. Better still enlist a buddy who also wants change and support each other, a bit like a training partner in the gym, you will motivate and encourage each other.
- Stay positive, optimistic and realistic, develop your will to stay resourceful throughout this process. This is just one way that a support partner or group can really help.
- Stay flexible and open to change: Remember, you only fail when you stop trying; through sustained effort and a willingness to learn and adapt to emerging circumstances, you will make change happen. That’s why it’s important to get super-clear about what you want ahead of time!
