A manhunt in Thailand
Last Wednesday, Jan. 15, the search for suspects in the fatal shooting of Cambodian opposition leader Lim Kimya in Bangkok saw a new development. Thai police announced they are now searching for a third suspect, Ly Ratanakrasmey - an adviser to former Prime Minister Hun Sen - who they believe masterminded the plot.
Ly Ratanakrasmey was one of many opposition activists to switch their allegiance to the ruling Cambodian People’s Party – some after receiving legal threats or other forms of pressure – ahead of the 2023 general election.
A suspected gunman was arrested earlier this month, and charged on Monday, Jan. 13. Meanwhile, police continue searching for a second accomplice who, according to records, is the brother of a Cambodian official.
Lim Kimya was a former member of parliament for the banned Cambodia National Rescue Party. A tireless critic, he was outspoken on issues such as corruption and human rights, even after many of his opposition colleagues fled the country after the party was banned in 2017.
The killing has raised new alarms about Thailand’s autocratic neighbors pursuing critics on Thai soil. While Lim Kimya is the first politician to be shot dead in Thailand, several opposition activists say they have been attacked in Thailand for criticizing their government.
