Manhattan

Welcome back, or if it’s your first time here, take a seat, and I’ll fix you a drink.

Today, we are going to look at a Manhattan.

The Manhattan remains a symbol of classic cocktail culture and is enjoyed by many cocktail enthusiasts around the world. Let's dive in and look at how to make this drink and how to make it your own.

Let's start with some ingredients:

  • 2oz Whisky, Preferably a good Rye
  • 1oz Sweet Red Vermouth
  • 1 Maraschino Cherry
  • 0.5ml Bitters
  • Click below to add these to your Instagram cart:

What Glass should I use,…

  • Coupe or? Martini glass

What hardware do I need?

  • Shaker
  • Measurer or Jigger
  • Strainer

Directions - Let's do this; let's make a drink!

This one is super simple.

So, before we start, let’s take a moment to reflect on how we make this drink better.

The cherry is all but decoration. Yet still, I tend to buy a single brand of cherries, Amerena Fabbri; I’ve also had Luxardo cherries, which are great, too. Some of my drinks call for a drop or two of the syrup from the cherry jar so that the flavor profile can make a difference. People eat the cherries; they aren’t just a slice of lime; spending a little more here makes your drink more memorable.

Vermouth, I strongly recommend Noilly Prat Rouge for the Vermouth; it's just the right blend. Yet experimentation here is key; any red or sweet vermouth will work, and each one has its own accents and notes that completely adjust the drink.

Whisky is really where you want to experiment; I suggested a Rye, but try a scotch Irish or Bourbon. Also, try different Rye’s. Each one has its own flavor; see how it blends with the vermouth.

Bitters are a dream; use none? Use a bit - use a few drops to find the profile that you like the best. I often use no bitters at all - I like the Noilly Prat, and I try to lean into a mid-price Rye. So if I have a nice whisky and a nice vermouth that I like - why add the bitters?!

Now, on with the directions:

Place some ice in your shaker.

Add the Whisky, Vermouth, and Bitters.

Spear a single cherry on a stick.

Close your shaker and give it a good shake.

Strain your drink into the empty glass (no ice )

Add the Cherry on the stick.

Enjoy

Tips

Freeze the martini glass first for a frosted look (you can see that in the photo.)
