Mangroves: A Custodian of Biodiversity

Found growing around the coastlines of tropical and subtropical regions, Mangroves are one of the most unique ecosystems found in 123 nations and territories. Taking up less than 1% of all tropical forests worldwide, they have been subjected to widespread destruction and are now left vulnerable.

International Day for Mangrove Conservation is a reminder of the vital role of mangroves in preserving coastal ecosystems.

Mangrove conservation is essential to fighting the climate crisis. Mangrove forests support rich biodiversity and provide a habitat for fish and crustaceans. Mangroves also act as a form of natural coastal defence against storm surges, tsunamis, rising sea levels and erosion. This coastal tree shrub constitutes one of the most efficient carbon sinks, sequestering vast amounts of carbon. Human intervention has led to a significant amount of degradation to mangrove forests. The rate at which mangroves are being destroyed is alarming.

In the Kannur District in Kerala, we are working towards mangrove conservation and restoration in association with various panchayats and Haritha Kerala Mission, the Government of Kerala. The mangroves in the Kannur District make up an astounding 80% of the total mangroves in Kerala. For this reason, awareness and plantation sessions are an integral part of this initiative.?

Focusing on stakeholder engagement, Apollo Tyres has organised eight webinars and events related to biodiversity awareness and mangrove conservation. We reached out to a total of 80,000 people and covered 6.4 acres of land. The mangrove conservation initiative also received appreciation from the Haritha Kerala Mission of the State Government of Kerala.

Apollo Tyres is committed to conserving and restoring mangroves to foster and nurture a diverse ecosystem. It is integral for combating climate change and reversing the damage done by human intervention.

Although today marks the International Day for Mangrove Conservation, we are committed to the protection and conservation of Mangroves all year round.?
