He's played a role for so many of the big clubs in Europe and played it well.
Dynamo Zagreb, Wolfsburg, Bayern Munich, Atletico and Juventus have all been fortunate enough to prosper from his power and aerial presence.
He's appeared in the Champions League final with more than one club, becoming the first Croatian to score in the final when he went on to win it with Bayern Munich. That goal may well have left your memory, but the one he scored in last years final is one that'll stay with us forever. If you haven't seen this before, then I don't know where you've been hiding.

Impressive to say the least.
At 31 years old some would say he's on his way out, but if he can keep performing at Juventus there'll be a few more years to come. After all, we've just seen Gareth Barry break a Premier League appearance record at the age of 36. If he can do it, Mario certainly can.
Maybe he'll move away from Italy in the distant future, after all battling for a place in the side against Gonzalo Higuain and Paulo Dybala isn't going to be easy.
