Managing Yourself Through AI Change
How to manage yourself through AI change....successfully!

Managing Yourself Through AI Change

Adapting to AI in the workplace might seem daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. With the right mindset and a clear approach, you can turn this period of change into an opportunity for growth. Here’s how to manage yourself effectively through the transition.

Growth mindset

First, embrace a growth mindset. Change can be challenging, but it’s also a chance to expand your skills and explore new opportunities. Instead of focusing on what could go wrong, think about how AI can make your work easier or open up new possibilities. Celebrate your progress, no matter how small and stay curious about how these tools can improve your role.

Understanding the changes around you is key. Take time to learn the basics of AI and ask questions about how it applies to your work. The more informed you are, the easier it is to see where AI fits in. Stay updated on industry trends to keep yourself ahead of the curve. For example - speak to our team about tapping into our FutureOfWork Gizmo - it's a tool designed to help you understand which roles in your team will change because of AI - and when that change is likely so that you can plan for it. It can also help you understand how your people can be retrained to take advantage of AI.

Learning new skills is part of the process, so make time for it. Many organisations offer training, but you can also explore online resources or short courses - like the one we run. Beyond technical knowledge, focus on sharpening your creativity, problem-solving and emotional intelligence—skills where humans will always have the edge over AI.

Uncertainty is only natural

It’s natural to feel uncertain or even anxious about change, but don’t let those emotions take over. Acknowledge how you’re feeling and remind yourself that you’re not expected to master AI overnight. Be patient with yourself and treat this as a journey, not a race.

Staying organised can help you navigate this transition more smoothly. Set clear learning goals and break them into manageable steps. Dedicate regular time to practicing with AI tools and keep track of what you’ve learned so far. It’s also a good idea to start small, experimenting with AI on low-risk tasks before integrating it fully into your routine.

Talk it through

Communication plays a big role too. Talk to your colleagues and other leaders about your experiences with AI. Share what’s working, ask for feedback and raise concerns early if you’re struggling. Collaboration and shared learning can make the process much smoother.

It’s important to see the bigger picture as well. AI isn’t just a tool to make your current job easier—it’s also an opportunity to develop in your career. Think strategically about how these technologies can complement your role and open doors to new opportunities. Commit to lifelong learning, as adapting to AI is an ongoing process, not a one-off challenge.

Success

Finally, celebrate your successes along the way. Take time to reflect on how far you’ve come since the start of the transition and share your achievements with your team. Recognising your progress will build confidence and keep you motivated.

Managing yourself through AI change is about staying open, adaptable and focused on long-term growth. By taking this approach, you’ll not only handle the change effectively but also position yourself as a vital part of the future workplace

Great points here Ruth. Starting on this journey can be daunting but just speaking to others that are on the journey and then perhaps thinking about how you could use it to get started would build confidence. Even if you just do something in your personal life using chat gpt, it will get you thinking. You’d be a great person to help get others started Ruth!
